(Exodus 14:11,12).

Achter hen komen soldaten.
Daar is hun Heere.

Omhoog kijken. Daar waar het heil des HEEREN is. Daar waar Jezus is.

Waarom laat Hij mij alleen ploeteren?

The theme of the speech: 'Being still' w.r.t. Exodus 14:13 and 14

Introduction
Last week we heard that Moses inquired after God's name. Years ago I gave speeches about how the Lord led the Israelites out of Egypt. We pick it up and follow the Israelites in the desert again.

Detour
After much wrangling between Moses and Pharaoh the exodus began’. The Israelites are on their way to the promised land. Something they looked forward to despite the grumbling from them.
The Lord does not lead them along the main road, but brings them on a detour. A manner of treatment which the Lord does every now and then.

This happens sometimes also in our days. This applies to the life of a non-Christian and in the life of a Christian. Are you also familiar with it? You thought: it would go so and so go, but  for your feeling it ended up quite differently. Still, things turned out well. Nice if you may see this afterwards. Especially if you may see that the Lord God never gets it wrong. Then you continue with Christian courage.

Close upon the heels
But it does not yet apply for the Israelites. Courage fails them when they see  that Pharaoh is coming. He is very close at their heels.
Pharaoh afterwards regretted that he had let the Israelites go. He sets off in pursuit. They're like rats in a trap. Before the Israelites is the sea. On either side mountain ranges and behind them Pharaoh's army. There is no way of escape. What now?
Obviously, they begin to complain about their distress. Moses gets blamed for everything. He is the scapegoat.
They say to Moses: why haven’t you stay us in Egypt. Have we come here in the desert to die? (Exodus 14: 11,12).

Is there anyone who recognizes this situation? You feel trapped on all sides. Your study does not run smoothly. You are at your wits’end. Another has to struggle with a setback in his marriage or relationship. It seems that there is no way out anymore. Again another has run aground  with his work. Anyway, every where seas and mountains of objections.
Especially if you follow the Lord with all your heart you can get stuck spiritually. You notice that the devil is on your heels.  Inside and outside he turns everything upside down. In addition, he will try to block your view on the Saviour Jesus. Is this life with the Lord? It is death in the pot. You want to give up  spiritually. In addition, everyone gets the blame.

Fear not
Listen, There is the voice of Moses. What is he saying? Don't worry. Everything will be fine. Come, put your back into it. Don't put on airs. Does Moses offer this kind of consolation? No,  Moses doesn't.
Moses won't come up with cheap consolation.
Besides, in the context of the history it appears  that Moses didn't know it either. He also prayed and called to the Lord for deliverance. (verse 15).
What does Moses say? Fear ye not, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord (verse 13). In other words, deliverance comes from God.
Fear ye not, stand still? How can Moses say that? A strong army is closing in on them from behind. What should you do when you're unarmed? And then stay where you are? You might flee, but where to ?
Moses also says: look. Look? And when they look around they see everywhere mountains and before them the sea. Behind them are soldiers.
What's the matter with Moses? Why can Moses say this? Moses keeps the spirits up because the Lord gives him courage. Moses' faith goes into action because the Lord takes action.
Israel should not look at the circumstances. They should not look around and behind them, They should look up. There's the cloud. There is their Lord. There's  the salvation of the LORD.
Do you know who is meant by this salvation? The Saviour Jesus. Even though he was not yet born at the time of Moses. He was indeed in heaven. He was also with the Israelites in the desert. The tribe of Judah travelled along with them. From this tribe the Lord Jesus will be born.

What a life full of strife, opposition and enmity He had to pass through ? What enemies. What did he do? Did He gave up the courage? Luckily not. Otherwise it would have been hopeless for us. He looked up. He relied on his Father.

Are you both socially and spiritually under the weather? Mentally there is anything going. It might be that sins of the past and present 'chase' you. What to do? Meanwhile, you know you can not save yourself. What now?
Do you know what to do? Look up. The place where is the salvation of the LORD. Where Jesus is.

He is the only Agent in hopeless situations. Have you got kowledge of that? Spiritually you are at the end of your tether. The Lord took it out of your 'spiritual hands'. Perhaps there wasn't a proper solution at the time, but yet it was different. You could look up.  Just that alone ... What a grace. You became still from it.

Being still
Moses continues his gospel. With his good message. He says to them: The Lord shall fight for you, and you shall hold your peace. Moses taught them the right way. This is the most positive way.
Do the Israelites hear it rightly ? Precisely at a time when they think: where is the Lord, there is this message. The Lord does not forget them. The Lord will take care of them. They have to give it 'out of' hands and give it into His hands. These are the hands of the Good Shepherd. Better hands there are not not.
He will provide a path through the sea. On that they will come to the other side. He will drown the strong army of the Egyptians into the sea. No enemy will be left.

Do you recognize the situation of the Israelites in the wilderness? You aren't chased by an army, but you feel like being captured. The questions are piling up. Your situation is getting worse and worse.
You ask yourself: where is God now? I hear nothing from Him. Why does He let me slave away on my own?
Do you know why? Thus, our impossibilities, become God's possibilities. You must hold your peace.
Do not complain. Do not try to do it yourself. Don't get to work by yourself. Yield it to the Lord.
Stand still. You needn't do anything by yourself. The Lord does it. He creates a 'path'. He provides a solution.
Do you know that this is the most difficult thing we have to learn in our lives. Relinquish. Being still.
Especially if we know something of the spiritual life -  walking with Him - is this a lesson for life.
You know there are a lot of quibbling about the contribution of the medical expenses. One wants a partial contribution. Yet another wants to abolish it altogether.
In the spiritual life you don't have to make any contribution. Not even a little. What I mean?
No good intentions. No promises of improvement. Also our tears over the sins are no contribution.  Though life with the Lord is not without tears over the sins.
Let Jesus make the full contribution. He is willing to help you. The LORD will put up a fight for you. You must hold your peace.
Let Jesus be your great Example. Why? In desperate situations, he gave it over to his Father.

To obtain salvation and redemption  is the easiest and the hardest thing there is. The easiest if you let the Lord do anything. Everything, includes anything. He is a 'complete' Saviour.
Salvation becomes difficult if you are in the Lord's way. And that's what the children of God do. Therefore being saved is such a struggle. Take this lesson with you: The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.
He shall not relinquish, the work His hands began.
You don't know the Lord with your heart? Then you are not allowed to be still. Then do everything to get to know Him with your heart. Find a relationship with Him through Jesus. Only if that relation is in you, you may and have to "be quiet."
