Thema van de toespraak: ‘Doelgericht leven in 2017’  n.a.v. 2 Thessalonicenzen 3:5.

Inleiding

We leggen onze zaak in Zijn handen. Daar is het veilig.

Richte uw harten…

Lijdzaamheid betekent geduld, volharding oftewel uithoudingsvermogen of volhouden.

The theme of the speech, "A Purposeful Life in 2017 'w.r.t. 2 Thessalonians 3: 5

Introduction
Tonight at 00:00 h. we entered 2017. None of us knows what this year will bring. Both in the overall picture, as in our personal lives. One thing we do know that the time comes closer that the Lord Jesus comes back.
We sincerely wish hearers and readers of this summary a blessed new year. We pray and hope that we are doing the most important things in our lives. Aiming our lives in 2017 on the Lord Jesus. Then you have the best perspective in view in 2017. This New Year's speech is focused on this target. As a matter of fact, the question is on which our heart is focused.

Letter
Paul wrote this letter about the year 50 D.V  to the church of Thessalonica. That is the current Salonika in Greece. It was a thriving congregation. Paul often addresses this congregation in a posive way and here and there he admonishes them lovingly. He also warns the congregation. For example, for the antichrist. He also urges them to live holy in view of the return of the Lord Jesus.
At the end of the letter he mentions a few admonitions. These admonitions are certainly not negative. He means those admonitions the best.
Bringing admonitions into practice, they can not in their own strength. They need the Lord for it. Hence the prayer: the Lord directs your hearts ...

The Lord ...
The Lord comes first in this dispensation. Paul knows that it has to come from Him. All help and blessing then and now. We can not call the Lord to account as if He is obliged to help us.
Rather He has to call us to account because we are not so willing.
The Lord is the First and the Last of whom we should and are allowed to think in 2017. He is in control. Not Trump or Putin. Do we want the Lord to have a say in our lives in 2017?  From ourselves we would rather stay in control. We all have our own P.L.C ( public limited company).
When the Lord touches or has touched us, it is done with our P.L.C.Then we put our business in His hands. There it is safe.

Direct your hearts ...
Here you have to think of an marksman pointing his gun at a target. Or of children who look very specifically at the board what the teacher writes on it. Or to someone who is very focused and strenuously looking at  his smartphone.
In the above examples, the gaze is directed one way. From ourselves we focus on everything  except on the Lord.  In this mind-set we entered 2017. There is so much to see. You simply get tired of it. Take only your smartphone. On average, we gaze at it 221 times a day.
To set our hearts on the Lord, we need the Lord Himself.
You can compare it to a child which just managed to walk a little better. It has the tendency to always walk in the wrong direction. You have to turn the child back to the right direction again and again.
So it is with us. Even if you have become focused on the Lord, you still tend to walk in the wrong direction.
What do these people look like whose heart is focused on the Lord? These are not people who say: what's my heart still focused on the Lord. No, they dread it that their heart is not focused on the Lord. They still see far too many beautiful things outside the Lord. They pray quite often: Incline my heart and join it up to the fear (love) of Your Name.

To the love of God ...
When is our heart  completely directed to the Lord in 2017? When He touches us with His love.
Love is a word much used and abused. Sometimes it seems like there is no real love anymore.

Although in many films it's about love ...
In these words it is about the love of God. This refers to the love of God to people and love of  people to God. Love generates love in return. So it is in a good relationship or marriage too.
When God touches us with His love, we become small for Him. Then you're surprised.
Then we say: Lord, how is it that You want to do with me.
If you know this or if this happens to you in 2017, you really have a blessed New Year. What love we feel for the Lord. The surprising thing is that we start to complain to love Him so little.
True love uncovers the scarcity of love. I heartily wish you this beautiful pull of love in 2017.

And the patience of Christ
How can you sustain this love in 2017? Not by continually saying that you love the Lord. Then you fool yourself and others. No, your heart should be focused on the endurance of Christ. Meekness means patience, perseverance i.e endurance or persistance.
The patience of Christ is that He has sustained. Even when it became very difficult for Him. For example, when He was about to be crucified  and carried His cross under excruciating circumstances. What a stamina. What a love. He even prayed for those who send Him to His death. How could He sustain it? His heart and eye were focused on His Father. To Him He clamped Himself .

How can we sustain a life with the Lord in 2017? Indeed, there is still so much by which we will be swung back and forth in 2017. How can a newborn monkey hold on the back of its mother despite his mother swings from one branch to another branch ? The baby monkey clings to its mother's neck. Its feet are  clamped against its mother. He is, as it were, one body with its mother. You understand my purpose with this example. Of ourselves we do not hold on to the Lord. I assume that you know this. To hold Him tight, an intervention from above is needed. The rebirth. As always, I hope to highlight the necessity of it in 2017.But suppose you know this intervention. How do you keep keep it up in 2017? By 'clamping' through faith against Christ. By thus being one with Him. Also, yes, as it becomes difficult in 2017. If you get tossed to and fro. You can compare it with a creeper. which attaches itself to the post against which it grows. It grows all the way around. By persevering in the love of God, you get  mental stamina. But this is only possible by setting your heart on the love of God in Christ. 'Envelop' you around Christ. You remain in yourself a 'poor' sinner. A spiritual poor one . We'll hear more of it D.V. next week. Thus you'll have such a focused life in 2017. A purposeful life. Then you have a rich life.

Christ's eye was also focused on the eternal glory that was imminent. That's why He persevered. Then do not point all your glances at earthly things in 2017. But direct your gaze to where Christ is in eternal glory. That gives meekness. That gives stamina. To which is your heart directed ? Not yet to God's love? Not yet to Christ's patience? Take a close look at the beginning of 2017 in His kind eyes. He offers you a truly blessed year. Pray: open my heart to You as Your heart is open to hopeless cases. We warmly wish you such a blessed 2017. That's a purposeful life when it's focused on Christ
