Thema van de toespraak: ‘Onbegonnen werk?’ n.a.v. Handelingen 17:32-34

Paulus
Zie Handelingen 9.

Omdat Paulus zo geweldig sprak? Omdat Paulus zo sympathiek is?

English version

Summary speech Sunday 26-6-2016. Evangelist J.Krijgsman.

Phone 020-6227742; mobile: 06-83571391. Amsterdam@bijbelcentrum.nl www.bijsimondelooier.nl The theme of the speech: "A hopeless task?" w.r.t Acts 17: 32-34

Sometimes pastors ask themselves: Where doI it all for? Does it make sense?
The number of listeners on Sunday decreases rather than increases. Especially during the second service. You notice so little evidence that the Word lands in humans. That it affects them and works something out in their hearts. It is actually a hopeless task. But is this so? Therefore we’ve put a question mark behind our theme.
Also the apostle Paul struggled with the questions above. In addition, Paul also had to deal with people who made his life miserable. Is it all hopeless, flogging a dead horse? No and no again. Look at our texts that require attention. You read there  three responses to the preaching of Paul. Some scoff at his sermons or disdainfully lay it beside them. Others assume an attitude of expectation. And others believe! So anyway: not a hopeless task !

Paul
Who is the apostle Paul? Paul was born about 3 AD.in Tarsus (Cilicia) and died in Rome in the year 64 or 67. Before he became a Christian, he fought agaist the Christian faith with great zeal. But God intervened. He converted him and Paul turned to Jesus. See Acts 9.
Since then, Paul has been an ardent preacher of Jesus. For the cause of Christ he travelled quite a lot.

Areopagus
Paul was also in Athens. He preached there on the Areopagus. This was a square in Athens where the magistrates and the judiciary met. The judiciary called themselves with the same name as the square Areopagus. In this court were also philosophers. The court invited guest speakers to inform the Athenians on new developments and philosophies. Paul also was invited to the Areopagus. He pronounces there a fiery sermon which  is structured very nicely. Briefly, it comes down to the the following. God who dwells in heaven, is the Creator. He made out of one man all nations. Why?
To honor Him and seek Him. We don’t do that from ourselves. Yet He is not far from us.
What does He want? That the people repent to Him. There will come a day when God will judge the world by Jesus Christ. He raised Him from the dead.

We can learn a lot from how Paul went into discussion with the judiciary and the philosophers.
He links up with what is known to them. That's for them an altar with the inscription:
"The unknown god”. Referring to this inscription he seeks connection with the God Who Paul and all Christians serve.
Do you discuss or are you going to discuss the faith with others ? You can for example start with the topics of the moment. That can be Max Verstappen, the successful Formula 1 driver.
Or Steven Kruijswijk the successful cyclist. Or the Tour de France. All kinds of possibilities are there. But try as quickly as possible to go to the core, that’s the Gospel, as Paul did.

Mockery
What are the reactions after Paul's sermon on the Areopagus? Some scoff at the preaching of Paul. They find him a braggard.  But why are they mocking?
They can’t produce a rebuttal.Otherwise it had been mentioned here. They can’t find refutations against the sermon on the ‘unknown God’. Then there is nothing else than resort to ridicule.
Derision is a common weapon of the devil. Often one of the final weapons of the devil.
Then he brings in people making the Gospel message look ludicrous.
You see that happening today. All that is holy is ridiculed. Even as far as politics.Yes, even up to in various churches bad if  the preaching of the Gospel invokes mockery. What are you far away then. Then you are in the power of the evil one. But even mockers can be saved by Jesus, Who let Himself make voluntarily ridiculous (Matthew 27:29). Jesus did this so that even scoffers can be freed from ridicule. Even if you do not notice that you're a scoffer. How good He is.

Delay
All sorts of people are among Paul’s audience. Yes, there are really only two kinds of people. People who believe in Jesus and those who do not believe in Him. But these two types come in different degrees. Also with Paul’s audience.
There are those who say: another time you are allowed to tell us more about it. It's a polite response.
But definitely a rejection. This is a smart move by the devil.
It is a life-threatening reaction. Why? Which one of us says that there will be another time to listen to Paul again? That other time has not come for those people. Hence it significantly says here that Paul left them. Paul away means the Gospel away.

We also are procrastinators. From ourselves we say: tomorrow I will repent and believe. But which of us knows whether there will be a tomorrow? The Lord has only one time and that is now. Now as you hear His voice, do not harden, but repent. Believe the Gospel. Do not procrastinate. Soon it will be too late. Don’t you know how to repent and how to believe? Ask the Lord for it. He wants to guide you to repentance and faith. What is he good.

Believe
Is it hopeless for Paul? Does not his sermon work anything out? Thank God it does!
What does it say? Some, men and women, joined Paul and believed.
The verb believe here means: pay faithfully attention to, trust in something or someone.
Compared with the huge crowd who listen to Paul they are not many who believe. But they are there.
How does that happen? Because Paul spoke so captivating? Because Paul is so sympathetic?
This might have contributed to it. But the secret is because the Lord has promised that His Word always works out something. So we never leave the church in the same mind than we came into it.
These people do not believe in Paul. That would not be good either. If it's good, that's the last thing one a pastor wants. He does not want admirers, but points people to Jesus.
These people trusted in the Word that Paul spoke about Jesus. They trusted in Jesus. Jesus who saves sinners. Who saves sinners from sin and destruction.
People who believe grow also stronger in faith through Word and Spirit. What does this mean?
Your own mental efforts inceasingly break you at your hands. Therefore you concentrate as "poor sinner" more and more on the 'rich' Jesus. He becomes everything for you. Formerly they formulated it in this manner: " to despise own forces is taught on Jesus’ school. That means: become stronger in faith.

Which group?
Do you know which group you belong? To the mockers or the procrastinators? Whether you're one of the scoffers or the procrastinators, it makes little difference. You don’t believe at this very moment the message about Jesus.
Scoffers coarsely deny the Gospel. The procrastinators politely. Anyway, no message to the Gospel of Jesus. Does this affects, moves you? Then make no short work of your concerns.
Have you come through Word and Spirit to repentance and faith? Did you hear the saving message from the mouth of Jesus? Give the Lord the glory for it and pass the Gospel on to others.
This is not a hopeless task. By the grace of the Lord it’s a possible and beautiful work. He will bless it because He wants this. All this for Jesus' sake.
