Thema toespraak: ‘Een dwaze uitspraak’  n.a.v. psalm 14:1.

Men wil alles kloppend hebben.
Men wacht op bijzondere dingen.

Dood is dood.

Summary speech Sunday morning 14-5-2017. Pastor/ evangelist Johan Krijgsman.

Theme speech: "A foolish statement," psalm 14: 1.

Here and now
Have you ever contemplated that every person has his own story? Seeing a crowd of people together you sometimes wonder where all those people, in a spiritial sense, are heading for. How many of these people will believe in God? Who will realize and believe that life has a sequel after death?
Most people want to make it here. In this world they have to score. For most of them, this life is only important. Oh, if it doesn’t  go without a hitch.
Then they cry literally and figuratively blue murder . That can already happen if luck is against someone with  the football club of  his heart. Like last Sunday, when Feyenoord lost 3-0 against Excelsior. The fans of Feyenoord cried. Others smashed everything to atoms and were left behind with a hangover.
This is the life of millions of people in our country. If we only have a good time here on earth. Here we must be able to paint the town red. to empty the cup of pleasure to the last draught.                      But if things go awry? For example, with health? Then there must be the choice to step out. In a worthwhile way to put an end to it.

And God?
For the Lord God they have no time left. For that God Who has the right to our lives. To our time and love. To our body. In short: God who is entitled to everything. But unfortunately, for many people in our country God doesn’t exist  already for a long time. God is dead for them. God has disappeared from the eye-range of many people. He is the Great Absentee Who, according to them, never has Himself  heard of.
Every ten years this fact is supported by the research: 'God in the Netherlands'. Also in 2016 there was this research. The number of unbelievers rated 58% for the first time in the history of the Netherlands. The number of people who believe in higher power has dropped to 28 percent.
What do these figures do with you and me? Are we sad about this situation in our country?
If unbelievers are right, nothing is lost for Christians. But if Christians are right-and they are right- everything is lost  for atheists. What's gripping, heat rending. Come and repent!

Of all times
At Conferences increasing disbelief is a hot item nowadays. What are the causes?
Does this relate to the believers themselves? Don’t they radiate enough of the love of God? The love of the Lord Jesus Who does not seek Himself but another?  Might be. This is often lacking in the lives of many Christians. If it is well, they are sad and are bothered by it.
But shouldn’t we seek the cause deeper? According to Psalm 14, it is of all times that people say there is no God. Or do not take Him into account.
How is that :  Is the Lord God to blame? Doesn’t He reveals Himself? Does He Keep Himself to Himself ? Asking the question is answering it. You must be blind to say that the Lord does not interfere with us. That is exactly the problem. We are blind in that regard. Blind for the reality of the Lord God. In the beginning of world history we switched off the light. In Paradise we made it dark. Spiritually dark. Do not say now that you have nothing to do with Paradise. Are you and I such  nice ones?
Therefore, says Psalm 14, there is no one that does good. Doing- good as the Bible says what doing-good is. What that is? Love God above all and your neighbour as yourself. To focus your life on Jesus.
For if there was someone who loved God and his neighbour, He was. Christians experience that they can do the biblical doing-good through faith in the Lord Jesus. By clinging to Him as a child  clings to its mother's skirt. He then stands up for them.

Done with it
David, the writer of this Psalm, is soon finished with people who say: there is no God. Those who do not take God into account. He says: whoever says that is a fool.
You're inclined to say: David, is that statement not a bit too premature? A little too outspoken?
You have but to be in trouble and  see nowhere a way out in all the problems.
Whatever you pray, it does not seem to help. Your belief in God is waning. Setback after setback comes in your way. Take into account the increasing tension in the world. And the baffling things that take place in nature. Like the very fast melting of polar  ice . Global warming, famines. Etc. If there is a God, why doesn’t He intervene?
Then it is quite understandable that, especially in our time, people say, there is no God.
With Him I have done.

Am I going to break a lance and intercede for people who say this and let themselves go, going on a spree? No not at all. First, something different. David is also in a very troubled situation at this moment. At the time of this writing, he is not sure about his life. He is being chased by his arch-enemy, King Saul.
Saul wants to make away with David. And not only Saul, but also others are fed up with David.
David, with God's promise that he is to become king, is in danger of death. In addition, David has the promise that Christ will be born of his posterity. Christ, the Saviour of people.
The hard facts in David's life are quite different. Yet David does not say: there is no God.

Reasoning
Why does David then hold on to God's existence? Do you know what the secret is?
David had not rejected the opened door that the Lord offered to humans. He had been allowed to accept and receive the Lord Jesus (John 1:12). He had, in spite of everything, hoped for God's promise.
Do you know,  many people inside and outside the church are reasoning too much. One wants to have everything satisfactorily explained to the human mind.
The secular atheist says: If there is a God, why does he not intervene? Why does he fail to do anything about the ruins, the chaos in the world? Conclusion: There is no God. Otherwise, he would intervene.
Unfortunately, many people do not know that Jesus predicted that it would be a chaos. Or people do not want to know. Precisely this prediction should bring people into consideration.
Within the church, the Lord is often not believed on His Word. One is waiting for special things.
One forgets the simple Word of Christ. He says: "If you will desire something in My name, I will do it." Simpler can’t , can it ? Then plead with the Father in the name of Jesus for help.

David's expectation
The Faith in the Lord God keeps David going. Many people miss this belief by their own fault because they keep the Bible closed. Others because they do not believe the Lord on His Word.
David expresses his faith at the end of this Psalm by seven words. ' Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion !' With Zion, Jerusalem is meant. There stood the temple. There, sacrifices took place to reconcile the guilt of the sins of the people. But they also sacrificed as thanks to the Lord.
All those sacrifices were "pre-sacrifices" of the great sacrifice of Jesus' life. He gave His life to reconcile the guilt of sin. David looked forward to that sacrifice.
David knew, in spite of everything, that the promised Christ would come. Therefore, in this short Psalm, he uses four times the name of Jehovah. This name means: I'm there. This "I am" has shown His faithfulness in the birth of Christ. Faith rests on the "I am." I will be who I will be. Despite all the impossibilities. Therefore, David does not end this psalm in despondency. He ends in joy.
Gladness is a fruit of the Spirit. A result of faith. By faith, you receive a spiritual happiness. Faith is not boring.

Personal
Do you still believe  that there is nothing beyond  what you hear and see ? Dead is dead. According to the Lord God, you are then living your life in a foolish way. Read the following Psalm, Psalm 15.
It is about people living with the Lord. Those who have a relationship with Him through the Lord Jesus.
Christ still seeks a relationship with people who deny His existence. Do not you think that's great? That is incomprehensible, isn’t it ? Do not let this request of friendship from Him pass you. If you react to this, you become a wise man/woman in the right sense of the word. Not wise in yourself, but wise through the Lord Jesus. He recommends Himself as the Wise, as the Sensible One.
If you were allowed to receive Him through faith, it applies to you: the wise man says in his heart, God is there.
I'm sure of it. In spite of my unbelief, He came within me through His Spirit. He showed what was wrong in my life. He made me go through my knees before Christ.
Now I want to live for Him. My heart is craving for Him because His heart craves for me.
This God in my permanent castle. He is my refuge, my shelter. I do not desire any other power in my life. Christ is God and Triumphator.
