Thema toespraak: ‘Met wantrouwen ontvangen’  n.a.v. Handelingen 9:26-31

Bedreigd (vers 23-25)

Even tussen haakjes.

Theme address: "Received with suspicion" according to Acts 9: 26-31

Endangered (verse 25)
Last time, we heard that Saul had to flee from Damascus. The Jews wanted to kill Him.
Who would expect this? The Lord had said that he had to suffer much because of His Name. But to such an extent?
Yet, this is the business card that the Lord gives to all His followers. He says that all those who want to live godly, who follow Him in love, will be prosecuted (2 Timothy 3:12).
Christ also says: They have persecuted me, they will also persecute you (John 15:20).
Therefore, you must keep this in mind when you have become a Christian. Fortunately, it is not the case in our country that you are killed for being a Christian. But think about those countries where you are at risk when you are or profess to be a Christian? Would you and I confess our faith even if you are at risk here too?
Hangers-on  will then drop out. True Christians are sometimes afraid that they are no more than a hanger-on. But when it comes to the trial, they flee through faith to Christ.

The secret of a Christian
A shrub or tree grows in that direction where the sun stands. The most heavy storm can’t prevent that. That’s the case with a true Christian. The most bizarre persecutions can not prevent them from growing in faith. They tend to bend to Christ. The secret is that Christ draws His children. You can compare it with a strap fixed around a tree and a thick pole. This strap makes sure that the tree does not fall down during storms.
Thus, the strap of Jesus' love ensures that His children hold on to Him. That they do not renounce their faith. Whatever 'storms' of difficulties and prosecutions may occur.
At any rate Saul has been involved in such prosecutions from the very start. And think about it, that was not easy for him. But the Lord was with him. He held on to him with the strap of His love. Look: that's the secret of a Christian.

Mistrust (verse 26)
After the failed attack on his life, Saul comes in Jerusalem. There he seeks the disciples and wants to join them.
Again such a beautiful trait of followers of Jesus. They don’t keep on standing on their own, but seek other followers of Jesus. They feel one with those people. But even then you may come away with a flea in your ear. So also with Saul. They do not believe that he is a disciple of Jesus. He who persecuted the disciples first, now a disciple himself? That can not be true. They are holding him for a spy.
The distrust for him is great. It is also understandable that the disciples in Jerusalem react in this way. I think you and I would have reacted similarly. In addition, the conversion of Saul was not yet widely known in the congregation of Jerusalem. Moreover, a true disciple of Christ does not move in too hurried a manner. He does not randomly lay hands on everyone. Certainly if you innitially knew the other as an enemy of the Christians.

Good word (verse 27-29a)
That the Lord makes a stand for His children, you can see here. He makes use of Barnabas. That was a sweet, gentle and wise disciple of Jesus. It's a real 'liaison man'. A kind of mediator.
A few years ago I had a speech about him. If you want to know more about him, read the 25-9-11 speech again. Ask me for that.
Barnabas takes Saul and leads him to the apostles.
Barnabas does not take Saul to the disciples, but to the apostles.
What is the difference between those two? All followers and pupils of Christ are disciples.
All true Christians are thus disciples. But disciples who are sent out with special duties Jesus calls apostles. See Luke 6:13.
A statement says that Barnabas takes Saul to the apostles Peter and James. Barnabas, as a true mediator, puts in a good word for Saul. He briefly describes Saul's conversion. That's what Barnabas does without much ado. Just as it happened.
Suppose they ask you how you came to believe. What do you tell them? Do you make a beautiful, thrilling story of your conversion of it ? Or, it may also be different ... can not you tell anything? Have not you come to repentance and faith yet? How bad is that. Make sure that a change takes place.

Pray for the action of the Holy Spirit. Then you will confess who you are. A sinner. You will then learn that your heart is sick and wrong. Our heart is not good. It is curved in yourself. Bent to yourself Focused on yourself. You therefore learn through the Spirit to believe in Christ. But not on our time, but on His time. The one does this with a stronger faith than the other. He actually came to earth for sinners. His pharmacy stored with spiritual drugs is overcrowded. It never gets empty.

Barnabas also tells how Saul spoke boldly in the name of Jesus in Damascus .
This word -boldly- means that Saul did this without fear. Fulfilled with the Holy Spirit, he testified of God's love in Christ.
This testimony of Barnabas draws the apostles Peter and James across the line. Or rather, the Holy Ghost causes them to believe Barnabas on his word.
They acknowledge Saul heartily as a brother in the Lord. From that moment on, he socializes with the other disciples. He becomes one with them.
What a blessing when you tag along with each other like brothers and sisters. That you are not (more) suspicious of the other. But that you socialize with other people by grace without distrust, and live with him or her. Where love lives and no distrust, the Lord wants to be with His blessing.

Re-threatened (verse 29b)
While he is one with the others, Saul preaches boldly. Through nothing and nobody he lets himself hinder. Fulfilled with the Holy Spirit, Saul testifies of God's great deeds. He tries to convince his listeners to follow the Lord Jesus with all that is in him. He can and does not want anything else.
The theme of his speeches is therefore always: 'The Name of the Lord Jesus'.
That name, that Person has become all for Saul. He knew Him as His Saviour, Redeemer and Forgiver of his sins. How happy you are if you can and may speak like Saul.
But if you speak so fully of the Holy Spirit, there is always something or some one that opposes it. So also with Saul.
The Greek-speaking Jews do not take that. Saul is embroiled in a fierce argument with them.
By the way. These Greek-speaking Jews first lived in Greece. Later on they perminently returned to Israel. With the big festivals they are in Jerusalem. This group want nothing to do with Jesus. Previously, they also turned against Stéfanus (Acts 7).
The hatred against Saul goes so far as to attempt to kill him. He is again threatened with death.
They take him to the coastal town of Cesaréa. Hence he takes ship for his birthplace Tarsen in Cilicia.
It’s remarkable that we read that Saul's spiritual brothers stand in the breach for him. The mistrust that they first had, has changed into concern for Saul. There the Lord has taken care of.
What a mercy if we are so filled with concern for each other’s well-being. Then we do not derogatorily talk about each other, but we pray and help each other. Pray for that mercy. Where love lives, there the Lord wants to be.

The Lord goes on (verse 31)
Despite opposition to the Lord, the Lord continues. That is what you read in verse 31. The congregations in Judea, Galilee and Samaria had peace in the Lord. The love of the Lord increased more and more.
They were also more and more filled with the comfort of the Holy Spirit.
The grace of the Lord Jesus extends like an oil spill over Israel. It was, as it were, once again Pentecost. Then here, then there. Despite the resistance.
What a blessing if we can say that too. But remember what I said.
To be filled with the Holy Spirit, there must first be a foundation. That base the Bible calls rebirth. By the Holy Ghost you are then made into a different person. He renews your mindset. You get another spiritual view on  sins, on yourself, but also, on His time, on Jesus, the Redeemer, the Saviour, through the working of the Holy Gost.
Let it be a comfort that Christ, right through everything, goes His way. Therefore, put yourself on His way
