Thema toespraak: ‘De bekering van Manasse’  n.a.v. n.a.v. 2 Kronieken 33:10-13.

Wie was Manasse?
Wij zeggen weleens: zo vader zo zoon.

In doodsnood.

Waarom moet Manasse blijven leven?
Steeds groter zondaar in eigen oog.

Summary speech Sunday morning 21-10-2018. Evangelist Johan Krijgsman.

Theme speech: 'The conversion of Manasseh' according to 2 Chronicles 33: 10-13.

In the Bible you can read some remarkable histories of conversion. We think of the repentance of the murderer in Luke 23 and Paul in Acts 9. Such conversions are rather exception in the Bible than rule. Repentance often takes place by degrees. You notice biblical fruits as the effect of repentance and conversion. That is reliable. Remember: you must and can be converted.
Today, it is also about special conversion. The conversion of King Manasseh. 1) the wicked Manasseh; 2) the captured Manasseh; 3) The praying Manasseh 4) The professing Manasseh.

1) The godless Manasseh.
Who was Manasseh? He was king of the province of Judah and son of the God-fearing king Hezekiah. He was only 12 years old when he became king and ruled from 698-643 BC.
You would think having a God-fearing father (God-fearing is loving the Lord) as an example, a son will go in the track of his father. Like father Like son.
By the way, what is it a privilege that our adolescents have such parents. Or when there are many god-fearing people in society. In that respect, we live in a poor time.
Like father, like son, won’t do with Manasseh. Once he is in power, he shakes off the education and goes his own way.
You will often come across that. In conversations with people on the street I heard that more than once. They then say: my parents or my grandfather were religious. Yes, not just superficially but very strictly. I  respected their stance. But I do not want to do anything with it anymore. I sort out things myself. By the way, in our days you can’t live with that stuff anymore? Hopelessly old fashioned. Let me enjoy and indulge in the life here and now. Manasseh at full length.

Manasseh also wants to enjoy life. He drinks it taking deep draughts. Some examples?
He encourages his subjects to worship the idols of the Gentiles.
He rebuilds the pagan temples that his father Hizkiah had broken down. He bends down before the sun, moon and stars and worships them regularly. He encourages the people to all wickedness.
He lets his sons go through the fire. That does not mean that he has them burnt, but he dedicates them to the idol Moloch.
He consults the magicians. He uses the power of evil spirits.
He even makes an idol in God's own temple. He organizes ungodly parties.
He does many things to raise the Lord’s wrath. He challenges the Lord.
How does the Lord respond to it? In His great goodness, the Lord still sends prophets to warn Manasseh and the Israelites.
What is the result of this? Manasseh and his subjects do not listen to it (verse 10).
In the list of sinful kings Manasse manages the top three. His life was a list of sequences of sinful deeds. Pure wicked. While he should know better.

The wickedness also reign supreme in our country.
Fortune-telling, constellations, using hidden forces, etc. are rife. Many ungodly feasts attract thousands of people. The idolatry is rampant. Even the government sometimes encourages wickedness.
We do a lot to provoke the Lord to anger. The Lord is not yet tired to speak to our country. We may still have the Bible. There is still  opportunity to come to church on Sundays. There are still possiblities for evangelism. There is still opportunity to repent. Let warn yourself.

2) The imprisoned Manasseh.
Being disobedient always has consequences. Will you remember, young and old? Just look at Manasseh. The country is attacked by Assyria. Manasse is being captured. The people not yet. Assyria first takes on  the leaders, the instigators. Under a thorn-bush, where he hid himself from the enemy, he is discovered and arrested. In an anything but gentle way he is treated. With hooks in his nose and copper chains he is taken to Babel. That's the consequence if you do not listen. Whoever does not want to hear, must feel.
Manasseh did not want to listen to the Lord. He deliberately overrode the education of his god-fearing father. Manasseh did not let himself convince. That is the end of his unrestrained life.

The Lord has to break our will and hostility.
You see that with Manasseh. Albeit it is very extreme in the case of Manasse, it won’t do us credit if the Lord also has to use so much violence with us. If He, as it were, has to imprison us. Yet there is a lesson. The Lord lets everyone who He is going to convert always experience something of their powerlessness and wickedness. He lets come it to a deadlock.
Also what it means without living without the Lord and being an enemy to Him.
With some, He shows something more of their powerlessness. With others, more of their enmity. Anyway, all of this works a sadness to God. Praying will be your food and drink. You can not miss the Lord anymore. You get to love Him. Love to the Lord is the hallmark, the identification mark.

3) The praying Manasseh.
Do you see Manasse lying in the grubby cavity of the enemy? Tied up. He is at the end of his rope.
Now he will pray to the God of his father. That side is always open.
Now he retires into himself and thinks, what have I done? Do we read that? Nothing of that all.
So the saying: 'Necessity is the mother of invention’( being in a state of emergency learns to pray)  is not true. You can see that here. No, the Lord teaches people to pray. What do we read then? "And when he was in affliction" (verse 12). The Lord has to step in. And when He distressed him. The Lord brings him into extreme need. Into agony. There he sees no way out . He is at a loss and at the end of his tether.
Then we read that Manasseh earnestly seeks the face of the Lord in prayer. He humbles himself greatly to the God of his fathers. He casts his mind back to his godly father. What, humanly spoken,    takes the Lord great pains to get Manasseh at the right place. The scoffer now becomes a praying one.

Sometimes the Lord must use a hard hand to get people praying.
You see that with Manasseh. That does not mean that you must put it off and go so far as Mannasseh did.  No, the Lord Jesus says, "pray and you will be given; seek and you will find "(Matthew 7: 7).

4) The confessing Manasseh.
Manasseh's praying is a sin-confessing praying. He knows his sins and is sad about it.
He humbles himself. Humiliation is a proof of real repentance of the life that is behind.
Manasseh also promises that he will repent of his old and sinful life.

If God teaches us through His Holy Spirit, come hell or high water.
Nothing is omitted. We then see ourselves as revolutionaries against the Supreme Authority.
That means that we learn to admit having earned death. Yet, we crave for salvation.

The Lord sees and hears this humiliation and confession of Manasseh. That means the words "And He was entreated of him" (verse 13).
Why does the Lord hear? He says, "But to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit and trembles at My word " (Isaiah 66: 2). He is faithful to His promise. Just all honour to Him.
The Lord brings Manasseh back to Jerusalem.
When Manasseh is in Jerusalem, he again pronounces a confession. 'Then Manasseh recognized that the LORD is God' (verse 13). He is sure that the LORD is only God and not the idols.
Remember that he did not keep this confession to himself. He shows, as it were, enthusiasm for the evangelization work.

Why must Manasseh stay alive? Because the Saviour, the Lord Jesus, had to be born of his posterity (Matthew 1:10).
We sometimes say that the Lord Jesus was born through the impossible. Everything was put in place to prevent that. But, the LORD is God. He rules. Even now.
Therefore, people who know themselves as a Manasseh will be redeemed. These come to the spiritual knowledge of the Lord Jesus. You will get to know Him with your heart. You want to live for Him.
The life of God's children is a succesion of praying, confessing and fleeing to the Lord Jesus. Getting a greater sinner in their own eyes, but also seeing an increasing glory in the Lord Jesus.

What a encouragement lies there also for parents who are worried about their ungodly,straying-off children.
We see here how a wicked Manasseh came to repentance.
What an encouragement  for children who have concerns about parents, brothers and sisters who have gone astray and serve the "world." For Him they are not unreachable.
Are you converted? The question is not whether you had a conversion like Manasseh. However, you will recognize some of the basic features of this. "For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation." (2 Corinthians 7:10). "To salvation": You are  drawn to the Saviour, to Jesus.
Don’t you recognize it yet? Then it comes to: praying and confessing of guilt. The Lord will certainly hear that.
