Het feest van de Geest - Handelingen 2:1-4

Samenvatting toespraak zondagmorgen 20-5-2018, 1e Pinksterdag  Thema:

Pinksteren wordt wel het feest van de Geest genoemd. Die dag herdenken christenen dat God de Vader Zijn Heilige Geest gegeven heeft op aarde. En dit is het herdenken meer dan waard. Die Geest was beloofd. De profeet Joël beloofde zelfs dat de Heere Zijn Geest zal uitgieten als een enorme plens water. Niet op een enkeling, maar over iedereen, jong en oud. Door die Geest komt er echt berouw over de zonde bij bikkelharde jongens en meiden. Bij afgestompte ouderen. Door de Geest komt er extase en ijver om voor God te leven. Mensen veranderen, vernieuwen er echt door. Het Evangelie doet wonderen. Ook vandaag. De Heilige Geest zet er het stempel van echtheid op. 

Eensgezind
Het is feest in Jeruzalem. De eerste vruchten van de nieuwe oogst worden aan de Heere geofferd. Symbolisch wordt zo de dank aan de Heere gebracht. En dat is een groots feest. De Heere wordt geprezen en gedankt. Veel mensen zijn bij dit feest aanwezig. Ook de discipelen. 
Ze maken nu geen ruzie wie van hen de belangrijkste is. Ook hebben ze het er niet over wie minister zal worden in het nieuwe godsrijk. Nee, ze zijn ‘eendrachtig’, eensgezind bij elkaar. 

Dat is een zegen als we zo bij elkaar mogen zijn in de kerk. Samen bidden, belijden en de Heere grootmaken voor Zijn zegeningen. 
Eensgezindheid is ook een zegen voor je gezinsleven. Als vader, moeder en kinderen op hetzelfde spoor zitten. Kortom: eensgezindheid is een zegen voor de maatschappij. Van wanorde wordt niemand wijzer. Laten we streven naar eensgezindheid. Daar is zegen op te verwachten.

Heer, ik hoor van rijke zegen
Terwijl men aan het feesten is, gebeurt er iets opmerkelijks. In het huis waar de discipelen zijn, komt opeens een geluid als van een geweldige storm. Het gebeurt met haast en onvoorzien. 
Deze hoorbare storm komt uit de hemel, van boven staat er. Het stormt dus niet echt, maar het is het geluid. Er is geen hoekje in de kamer waar het niet te horen is.

Deze storm is het eerste teken van de beloofde uitstorting van de Heilige Geest. 
Het woord dat de Bijbel gebruikt voor Geest, is wind of bewegende kracht. 
De wind kun je niet zien, wel merken. 
Je kunt het vergelijken met windmolens die door dynamo’s  elektriciteit opwekken. 
Soms draaien de wieken heel snel. We zeggen dan: kijk eens hoe het waait. 
De gevolgen van de wind zijn dus wel zichtbaar. 
Wat gebeurt er door die draaiende wieken verbonden met dynamo’s? 
Daarmee wordt elektriciteit opgewekt. Daarmee kun je o.a. licht laten branden en machines laten draaien. Die dynamo’s zorgen er dus voor dat de lichtbronnen en krachtbronnen werken. 

Vuur
Door het wonder van de Heere komen er op de discipelen tongen als van vuur. 
Geen echt vuur, maar áls van vuur. Dus op de hoofden van de discipelen zijn vuurvlammetjes te zien. Als het ware aangestoken door de ‘windturbines en dynamo’s’ van de Heilige Geest. 
Alles wordt bestuurd vanuit de ‘regelkamer’ boven. Geen mens die hier de hand in heeft.

Lichtbronnen en krachtbronnen
Denk even aan het voorbeeld van de windmolens hoe daarmee energie wordt opgewekt. 
Door de ‘storm’ en door het ‘vuur’ worden de discipelen krachtbronnen en lichtbronnen.
Aangedreven door de Heilige Geest. Vandaar dat ze gaan spreken met andere talen. 
Ze zijn niet tegen te houden. Zoals wij de wieken van windmolens niet tegen kunnen houden. 
Wat een licht verspreiden ze door hun woorden. Ze spreken van Gods daden. 
Van Gods heiligheid, gerechtigheid en majesteit. Ze prijzen Gods genade in Jezus Christus aan. 
Wat een kracht gaat er van hun woorden uit. Ze zijn niet te stuiten. Zoals wij geen draaiende motor tegen kunnen houden. Let eens op Petrus, die één stortvloed van woorden heeft. 
Nu gaat wel heel letterlijk in vervulling dat een christen een licht moet zijn (Mattheüs 5:14-16). 
Maar ook dat de HEERE hun kracht is (Psalm 27:1).

Persoonlijk appel
Heb jij al eens kennis gemaakt met deze Krachtbron en Lichtbron, met de Heilige Geest?
De Heilige Geest zie je niet, zoals de wind. Maar je merkt Hem wel, zoals het vuur.

Hij is de verborgen Krachtbron in het leven van mensen. 
Hij zorgt ervoor dat mensen licht ontvangen over hun leven.
Alles zet Hij in het licht. Alle schuilhoeken van je zondige hart komen dan te voorschijn.
Als we in een donkere kamer zitten, lijkt het alsof er geen stof op de kast ligt. Maar als de zon op de kast schijnt, zie je het stof liggen. Zo is het ook met het ‘werk’ van de Heilige Geest. 
Zolang de Geest met Zijn licht niet naar binnen schijnt, denken we dat alles in orde is. 
Ik doe goed m’n best. Geef ieder het zijne en geloof bovendien in God. 
Dus mijn pas voor de hemel is gereed.
Dat wordt anders als de Heilige Geest als Krachtbron en Lichtbron je aanraakt.
Alles van je innerlijk komt dan in het licht te staan en komt in gang.
Je krijgt verdriet over je zonden. Wat een liefdespijn ervaar je dan in je hart. 
Je ziet dat God je daarom moet straffen. Maar je ervaart ook iets van Zijn barmhartigheid in Jezus.
Door de Krachtbron, de Heilige Geest, word je voortgestuwd naar de Heere Jezus.
Je kunt het niet laten te geloven in Hem. Al is het meer met vallen, dan met opstaan. 

De Heilige Geest
Dit is allemaal het ‘werk’ van de Krachtbron en Lichtbron, de Heilige Geest. 
Hij is als een ‘geweldig gedreven wind’. Achter die gedrevenheid zit de ijver van de Geest om mensen tot bekering te brengen. Maar ook om hen die de Heere kennen, aan te zetten tot getuigen. 
Dan word je een krachtbron en lichtbron. Aangedreven door de ‘windturbines en dynamo’s’ van de Heilige Geest. 
Dan brandt de vlam van liefde tot God en je naaste. Ook al ervaar je die liefde niet altijd even sterk. 
Maar de gevolgen blijven niet uit. Je bent er voor je naaste om ze te ‘winnen’ voor Christus. 
Je helpt ze in allerlei maatschappelijke problemen. Je bent hierin niet te stuiten. 

Bij een bosbrand springen de vlammen van de ene tak op de andere. De wind zorgt daarvoor. 
Zo is het met een christen. Hij steekt door zijn vlam van genade-liefde de ander aan. 
De ‘windturbines’ van de Heilige Geest zorgen voor de verspreiding van het Evangelie.
Zo zal eens door ontelbaren het feest van de Geest voor eeuwig gevierd worden. 
Dan zal Christus eeuwig alle lof ontvangen. Amen.

Pentecost is called the feast of the Spirit. That day, Christians remember that God the Father gave His Holy Spirit on earth. And this is more than worth remembering. That Spirit was promised. The prophet Joel even promised that the Lord would pour out His Spirit like a huge splash of water. Not just on a single person, but on everyone, young and old. Because of that Spirit, there is real repentance about sin among boys and girls as hard as nails. In impassive,blunted elderly. Through the Spirit there is ecstasy and zeal to live for God. People change, they really undergo an innovative attitude to life.  The Gospel does wonders. Today too. The Holy Spirit puts the stamp of authenticity on it.

Of one mind
There is a feast in Jerusalem. The first fruits of the new harvest are sacrificed to the Lord. Symbolically, thanks is given to the Lord. And that's a magnificant festivity. The Lord is praised and thanked. Many people are present at this ceremony. Also the disciples.
They are not arguing now which of them is the most important. Nor do they discuss about who will become minister in the new kingdom of God. No, they are 'unanimously ' united together.

That is a blessing if we are allowed to be together in the church. Praying together, confessing and magnifying the Lord for His blessings.
Harmony is also a blessing for your family life. When father, mother and children are on the same track. In short: unanimity is a blessing for society. Disarray makes nobody wiser. Let us strive for consensus of opinion. Blessing is to be expected.

Lord, I hear of a rich blessing
While people are partying, something remarkable happens. In the house where the disciples are, suddenly a sound comes like a great storm. It happens with haste and unforeseen.
This audible storm comes from heaven. There isn’t a  real, tangible storm, but only it's sound is audible. There is no corner in the room where it can not be heard.

This storm is the first sign of the promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
The word that the Bible uses for Spirit is wind or moving force.You can not see the wind but you can sense it.
You can compare it with windmills that generate electricity by alternators.
Sometimes the blades turn very quickly. We say: look how it blows.
The consequences of the wind are therefore visible.
What happens due to the rotating blades connected to dynamos?
This generates electricity. This allows you to burn lights, among other things, and let machines run. These dynamos ensure that the light sources and power sources work.

Fire
Through the miracle of the Lord, tongues like fire come upon the disciples.
No real fire, but like fire. So on the heads of the disciples fire flames can be seen. As it were lit by the "wind turbines and dynamos" of the Holy Spirit.
Everything is controlled from the 'control room' above. No one who has a hand in this.

Sources of light and power
Consider the example of the windmills how this generates energy.
Through the 'storm' and through the 'fire' the disciples become sources of power and light.
Powered by the Holy Spirit. That is why they start to speak in other languages.
They can not be stopped. As we can not stop the blades of windmills.
What a light they spread through their words. They speak of God's deeds.
Of God's holiness, righteousness and majesty. They praise and advocate God's grace in Jesus Christ.
What a force goes out of their words. They can not be stopped. As we can not stop a running engine. Notice Peter, who produces
 one torrent of words.
Now it is very literally fulfilled that a Christian must be a light (Matthew 5: 14-16).
But also that the LORD is their strength (Psalm 27: 1).

Personal appeal.
Have you ever dealt with this source of Power and Light, with the Holy Spirit?
You do not see the Holy Spirit like the wind. But you do notice Him, like the fire.
He is the hidden source of Power in people's lives. He ensures that people receive light about their lives.
He puts everything in the light. All the recesses of your sinful heart then emerge.
When we sit in a dark room, it looks like there is no dust on the cupboard. But when the sun shines on the cupboard, you can see the dust. So it is with the 'work' of the Holy Spirit.
As long as the Spirit does not shine in us with His light, we think that everything is in order.
I'm doing my best. Give each one his own and also believe in God.
So my pass for heaven is ready.
That will be different if the Holy Spirit as a source of Power and Light touches you.
Everything of your inner self then comes to light and starts to affect you.
You get grieved about your sins. What a ‘pain of love’ you experience in your heart.
You see that God has to punish you for that. But you also experience something of His mercy in Jesus.
Through the source of Power, the Holy Spirit, you are propelled to the Lord Jesus.
You can’t ignore to believe in Him. Even if it is more with trial and error.

The Holy Spirit
Every aspect of this is the "work" of the source of Power and Light, the Holy Spirit.
He is like a 'rushing mighty wind'. Behind that drive is the zeal of the Spirit to bring people to repentance. But also to encourage those to witness who know the Lord.
Then you become a source of Power and Light. Powered by the 'wind turbines and dynamos' of the Holy Spirit.
Then the flame of love burns to God and your neighbour. Even though you do not always experience that love.
But the consequences don’t fail to occur. You are there for your neighbour to 'win' them for Christ.
You help them in all kinds of social problems. You are unstoppable in this.

In a forest fire, the flames jump from one branch to another. The wind takes care of that.
That's how it is with a Christian. He infects the other through his flame of mercy.
The "wind turbines" of the Holy Spirit ensure the spreading of the Gospel.
In this way the feast of the Spirit will be celebrated for ever by innumerable people.
Then Christ will receive all praise forever. Amen.
