Daarmee roepen we elkaar. Daarmee onderscheiden we elkaar.

Zo’n corrupte man.

In Zijn bloed. Waarom? Omdat Hij jou bij je naam noemde. Dat wonder kun je niet op. Amen.

Summary speech Sunday 31-7-2016. Evangelist J.Krijgsman. Phone 020-6227742; mobile: 06-83571391. Amsterdam@bijbelcentrum.nl www.bijsimondelooier.nl The theme of the speech, "called by name 'w.r.t. Luke 19: 5

What unique that we all have a name. Suppose we had to call each other by our Personal Identity Number. It would be a total chaos.
No, we have a name. Therewith we call each other. With it we distinguish each other. When you hear your name, someone else seeks to contact you.
This morning the address is about Zacchaeus, the tax collector, the tax official. He was called by his name by the Lord Jesus. Jesus sought to get in touch with him.
This morning The Lord Jesus also seeks contact with you. Through this speech, He calls you by your name. He is calling you to repentance and faith in Him.

Jericho
The Lord Jesus is going through Jericho. Jericho is the oldest city and also the lowest situated city in the world. Because the water of the city is provided by a source, palm trees grow there over a wide area . Therefore, the city is also called Palm City.
In Jesus' time Jericho was situated on an important trade route. Therefore there are a lot of so called duty gates where taxes must be paid on commodities.

Zacchaeus
Zacchaeus lives and works in Jericho. His name means' the pure, the righteous. "
Zacchaeus was the head of the tax office, and he was rich. That he was rich, is not in itself bad.
Abraham was rich as well. But Zacchaeus had become rich in a devious, sly way. Over the back of others. He was in the service of the Romans who then ran the show. He had to ensure that the taxes were levied at the tax gates. He fiddled therewith. He asked much more than he was allowed to. What he asked too much, he put in his own pocket. Therefore, the Jews hated him ardently. Unfortunately, he did not credit his name.

Also in Jericho- centuries before Zacchaeus-  lived Rahab the whore. She also earned her money in a way that was not right (Joshua 2). But she was also called by her name by the Lord.
When the Lord calls you by your name, everything else changes in your life.

Jesus and Zacchaeus
What Zacchaeus did, we're not going to explain away. Then not and not now.
What I think is right in Zacchaeus is that he wants to see Jesus. How is it possible. Such a corrupt, bribable man.
It doesn't say why this interest in Jesus. One thing I know, Jesus and Zacchaeus match each other perfectly.
For he has come to seek and to save that which was lost. And "lost" without faith in Jesus, we are and stay . Unless Jesus intervenes in our lives. Jesus has indeed come to call sinners to repentance. Therefore, He calls you now by your name.
Now I simultaneously know why Zacchaeus wants to see Jesus. Jesus draws him. That, Zacchaeus does not know yet. He will soon see through it.
Zacchaeus has a problem. He is not that tall. Many people take away his view on Jesus.
They stand in front of him. They block his view on Jesus.

Do you perhaps recognize yourself in Zacchaeus? No, you don't consider yourself a nice guy. If only the people knew who you are. Yet you have become  curious and interested  about Jesus. How all that came about you don't know. One thing you know: Jesus presents Himself as the Saviour of all sorts of trouble making. You've heard that  there are no hopeless cases for Him. So neither such a hopeless case like you.
Zacchaeus' view of Jesus was taken from him by many people. That's what you experience too. One says this and another that again. It happens only rarely that people point you straight away to Jesus. Through all those "wise advices" of others you become tired. It deprives you from your view on Jesus. Yet you want to see Jesus just like Zaccheus. To be acquainted with Him. Get to know Him.

Sycamore tree
Though Zacchaeus is small, he's smart. He eludes the crowds. Runs ahead and climbs a sycamore tree. He hides well behind the leaves. You may say in the bushes. In this position  he has an excellent view on Jesus when He passes by. So his desire to see Jesus comes true.
Faith is resourceful. Faith? Yea,  what Zacchaeus is doing here is faith in the bud. Why? Nobody  waits by himself  for Jesus. Jesus made him curious about Him.
So Jesus still makes people appropriately curious about Him. Because let's face it: Are you waiting from yourself for Jesus? If you really set your heart on Jesus, then Jesus is the sole agent of that desire. He has touched you through His Holy Spirit.

Jesus calls Zacchaeus by his name
Zacchaeus sits just high and dry when Jesus comes along. Jesus stops right in front of the sycamore tree where Zacchaeus is hiding. Jesus looks up and calls Zacchaeus by his name.
The Just Jesus calls the unjust Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus who discredited his own name, this very moment  meets the Righteous.
"Jesus, had to be his Name, said the angel to Mary. Jesus means Saviour. He always does honour to His name. That's his pride and joy.
Jesus called Zacchaeus by his name. He even wants to stay in his house. For Jesus, Zacchaeus is all worth it. Jesus doesn't sneer at Zacchaeus because he is a sinner. On the contrary. Jesus is just available for sinners. For them He is willing to give anything. Even his life.
God the Father wants Zacchaeus' sins being forgiven. That is why Jesus called Zacchaeus by his name. Jesus seeks contact with Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus is not a mere number for Jesus as we have our personal identity number. But Zacchaeus is a person for Jesus.
Shall we not treat one another like a number? That is wrong. Let's call each other by name.
Thus we suggest that the other person is important to you. That you are looking for contact with the other.

Mentioned by name
In Paradise the Lord called Adam daily by his name. There was perfect contact.
Then the greatest tragedy of all time took place. Adam, the human creature, no longer wanted to be called by God by his name. Adam and we in him severed the relation with God.
From that moment Adam and we were no longer interested in the Lord. Adam hid, just like Zaccheus, in the bushes. Not out of curiosity, but out of fear.
Yet the Lord didn't leave Adam and us to our own devices. That had indeed been His good right.  You can not assert rights if you consciously and wilfully breaks off contact with the Lord , can you?
Yet the Lord called Adam by his name. Adam who was hiding in the bushes, had to come forward. God sought contact with Adam. Not the other way round. You should bear that in mind.
When Adam had emerged the Lord clearly told him where the fault was with Adam. But he also said that a man with the name Jesus would come. Because His name is Jesus, He is willing and able to heal what we have destroyed. He makes sure that we again receive a name with the Lord.
Therefore, He calls you now by your name.
There are those who the Lord called already by their names when they were baptized. Thus He then indicated that He is seeking for your salvation. That He wants to give you a name among the children of God.

Have you already heard your name out of his mouth? Then you have come forward out of the 'thicket' of your sins.
You confessed them to Him and He forgave them. Now Jesus' Name and your name are forever connected.
He wants to connect your name more and more to His Name, to Jesus. Call Him by His name in prayer continually. For everything you pray to the Father in Jesus' name, will be given to you.

New name
If Jesus has called you by your name, you get a new name from Him. Your old name was Boanerges. That means son or daughter of thunder. This means nothing else than that the Lord was full of 'wrath' on you because you lived without Christ.
Your new name is  son or daughter of the consolation. You have  found grace-comfort in Jesus' wounds. In His blood. Briefly, in all that Jesus did to bring about a coming home to the Father for sinful people. Now you know only one desire: that His name is glorified. Why? Because he called you by your name. That miracle is beyond you. Isn't it ? Amen.
