We luisteren naar Jeremia 33:3. De toespraak verdelen we in drieën: 1) Een liefdevol bevel;

Even tussen haakjes.

Ondanks jouw ontrouw. Daar volgt maar één belijdenis op: Amen.

Summary speech Wednesday 8-3-2017 day of prayer. Pastor evangelist Johan Krijgsman.

The theme of the speech: 'Question and Answer' w.r.t. Jeremiah 33: 3

Day of prayer
Today is the day of prayer for 'crop and labour’. Once a year we have such a day. We pray to the Lord for His blessing for the process of labour. Both on land, water, the office and at schools and universities. It is an old saying: God's blessing makes all the difference. This still applies today. Even though many people don’t bother about  it anymore.
Still, the question may live:does prayer makes sense? Especially on a day like this. A Christian can not imagine a life without prayer. He prays for example, before going to dinner or before he goes to sleep.
Not only Christians are prompted to prayer. In the Bible  prayer holds for everyone. It says not for nothing: Ask and it shall be given. Watch and pray. Pray without ceasing.
Yet despite that, some Christians sometimes struggle with the question: Anyway what I’m praying for? Does it make sense?
Is there someone who listens to me? Can I change something in my life through prayer?
Sometimes, Christians and non-Christians go that far by saying: everything has  already been predestined. Praying therefore makes little sense. Someone else says: I can not pray or I don’t want to pray.
Does prayer make sense? Does it make sense to hold a day of prayer? We're looking for the answer in Jeremiah’s prophecy.
We listen to Jeremiah 33: 3. The speech is divided into three parts: 1) A loving order; 2) A rich promise; 3) A great reward.

1) A loving command
Jeremiah wrote his prophecy around 560 BC. Jeremiah prophesies about the very near future. That does not look rose-coloured. An antagonistic nation will capture the Israelites.
Jeremiah has always kept on warning. He has been ordered to tell the judgment over sin.
In our chapter, he may also designate God's grace in Christ, Who is called the Branch.
Jeremiah repeats the promises of salvation, of liberation. Although the situation is hopeless, for the LORD is nothing too hopeless. Never.

Perhaps it is also hopeless with you. You see no way out. Your studies are a complete failure. Your relationship is broken.  Someone else worries with problems in his marriage. Again another can not find work while he bothers with addiction. Maybe everything goes smoothly or without a hitch with you. That's nice. But if we look to the future and the affairs in the world things are anything but encouraging. Threats from all sides. Hence, there are many people despondent.

What does the Lord do in return? Does He join us and agree with us in  this matter? In a sense, though. He keeps us honest in mind that a terrible future is at hand. But He puts something else in return. He says in all the described situations: call to Me. He is the Lord. The Trustworthy.
What can and does He? He has proven in the past to make the impossible possible. He heals what is incurable. He forgives what seems unforgivable. Where people get stuck, he creates a solution. So is this Lord. To the present day.
How does He make the impossible, possible on prayer? He says: call to Me. That is a loving command. He does not say it with banging His fist on the table. No, he is of a different kind. Lovingly He urged the Israelites to do so. He also stimulates us to call upon Him. Calling is more than talking. It is praying with hands to mouth. Calling at the top of one's voice. You are about to call when you're in need. You call for help if you are in the water. threatens to be drowned. Or if you're jammed in a burning house.
Prayerfully calling upon Him. If you're in misery and see no way out. If you think there is no God. If you doubt on all sides. If you again have lost the battle against sin. As 'guilt' presses you down. Pray as ... Whatever: Call unto me. This call is the ladder by which we assault the heaven.
The bucket with which we get water. This calling is the key with which we open the heaven.
Jesus says: whatever you shall ask the Father in My name, I will do. What would you do more than just cry out to God in Jesus' name? He promised everything by it.

2) A rich promise
To His loving command, the Lord has attached a rich promise: I will answer you. That is what the Lord always does. He gives a command and a promise. Command and promise are to Jehovah twins.
We are not allowed to detach them. Woe to the one who separates the twins. We sometimes do that when we do not abide by our promise. So the Lord does not act.
He encourages us to come to Him in prayer with all our needs.
Praying  in the form of a prayer is to bring all our troubles and misery before the Lord God, and also to leave it there. To all our questions, he has a ready answer.
Sometimes He answers in a way quite different from what we desire or thought.
If you do not know how to pray, He says, I will teach you. If you do not know how to get rid of the addiction, He will give strength when you cry in prayer. If you do not know how to get rid of your guilt, He says suddenly: I have forgiven your sins.

If you do not know how to get through that test, he says, I'll help you. If you do not know how a promise is to be realized in your life? He says: I will answer you. I will see to it.
You can not ask Him a question and receive no answer.

Maybe you struggle with the question who is meant to "you" in the text. For the LORD says: I will answer you.
These are all the Israelites who have been and will be raided by the enemies. And the Israelites are no angels. If there is one nation that does not deserve to be saved. The Israelites are for sure.
And yet: Call to Me and I will answer you. How is it possible.
God's faithfulness towards our unfaithfulness, consists of two words: I will. That's gospel. That is the good news of the Lord.
His faithfulness became flesh and blood in the Lord Jesus. He is the Living proof of God's faithfulness.
For Jesus, there was no answer when He called on the cross. Now the paradox is: that He can and will answer people that call to the Lord. That is His rich promise in Christ.
He attaches a great reward that promise.

3) A great reward
What is the great reward? I will show you great and mighty things which you do not know.
What are those things? In the context of this history, it means that the Lord will redeem the Israelites. He will build the cities. In short, that He will provide for a recovery.
The reward will be that once the Saviour Christ will be born.
Is not that great news? You should just sit in the difficulties and see no solution.
Then this reward on your prayer is too unbelievable to be true.
By the way, you must not take this reward in the sense of: a service requires a service in return. (quid pro quo)
No, this reward is only given by the Lord for Jesus’ sake. In other words, by grace. Only because of Him the Lord makes great and mighty things known.

We draw the line further. What great things does the Lord make known to us? What reward will He give us on our prayerful cry? Now on this day of prayer, but again and again? What does He make us familiar with? He teaches us that on religious grounds nothing is to be expected from us. Whatever we bend over backward He teaches that His promises are "yes and amen" for the sake of Jesus. In other words: For Jesus’ sake,  He fulfills His promises. Often beyond the impossible. Just open your Bible.
He makes known to us the greatness of His love. Of that love, you have perhaps already heard hundreds of times. But if He will disclose it personally, your start really to relive it.
He teaches something of His eternal love and that to you. What great news is that!

Do we have time for this great news?  Or are we too busy with the amount of information that comes over us? We must be on the alert that these great and mighty things are not drowned by such a myriad of information and consequently leave no time for being busy with things far more important. Then we take no time to pray for the great and mighty things Jesus can give us. Such as forgiveness of sins and renewal of our lives. Are you interested in these things? In this reward? How can you get an interest in these things?
By calling on this day of prayer and after it to the Lord. By praying. That's the way He shows us. If you call, He adds a promise to it. That’s what we read here and elsewhere in the Bible.
Sit back, get to work. You will find to your amazement that He is a man of His word.
Did you experience that the Lord hears and answers the call? Continue with it and pass it on to others. What? That the Lord is faithful in Jesus. Despite your infidelity. That results in only one confession: Amen.
