Jezus zien - Johannes 12:20-22

Verlangen
Je kent dat verlangen misschien ook wel van vroeger. Je hoorde verhalen over de Heere Jezus. 
Je dacht: ik zou willen dat Hij nu nog op aarde was. Dan kon ik Hem tenminste zien. Dan kon ik Hem aanraken en met Hem meelopen. Nu is Hij voor mijn gevoel zo ver weg. De vraag kan je bezetten: bestaat Hij wel? En als Hij bestaat: waarom ervaar ik Hem dan zo weinig? Bekende vragen. Je staat daarin niet alleen. 
Toch denk ik dat je aan de verkeerde kant begint. Je stelt deze vragen als het ware aan de Heere. Maar het probleem ligt niet bij Hem, maar bij ons. Wij ervaren zo weinig van Hem omdat wij zo druk zijn met van alles. We nemen niet de tijd om Hem rustig tot ons te laten spreken. Ook vandaag ‘spreekt’ Hij nog tot ons door de Bijbel. Hij wil Zich in de Bijbel laten zien. Dan gaat je vroegere verlangen in vervulling. Wel anders dan jij dacht, maar je ziet Hem dan door het geloof. 

Grieken
Ook in de tijd dat de Heere Jezus op aarde was, waren er mensen die Hem wilden zien. 
Het was op één van de Joodse feesten in Jeruzalem. Daar kwamen ook buitenlanders. 
Die werden niet uitgesloten. Daar kunnen wij van leren. 
Deze buitenlanders waren waarschijnlijk in contact gekomen met Joodse gelovigen. Door die contacten hadden zich ze bekeerd. 
Een vraag. Met hoeveel buitenlanders ben jij al in contact gekomen? En wat werkte dat uit? 

Hier in Jeruzalem zijn het een aantal Grieken die zich bekeerd hadden tot het Jodendom. 
Ze zijn in Jeruzalem vanwege het Pascha en willen daar de Heere aanbidden. 
Deze Grieken hebben gehoord van Jezus. Mooi, he, als mensen horen van Jezus. Dat doet altijd wat. Neutraal tegenover Hem staan kan niet. Of je verwerpt of je vereert Hem. Onthoud dat. 
Deze Grieken zoeken contact met Filippus, één van Jezus’ discipelen. Via Hem willen ze in contact komen met de Heere Jezus. Heel indringend vragen ze aan Filippus of hij dat kan regelen.
Filippus gaat met deze vraag naar z’n collega Andréas en samen zeggen ze het tegen Jezus.

Filippus en Andréas worden vaak in één adem genoemd in het Evangelie. Ze konden het blijkbaar goed vinden met elkaar. Daarbij kwamen ze alle twee uit het plaatsje Bethsáïda. 
Fijn als je iemand hebt waarmee je regelmatig optrekt. Waarmee je dingen kunt bespreken.  
Het is helemaal bijzonder als je elkaar begrijpt in godsdienstige zaken. Dan heb je een dubbele band.

Raadselachtige uitspraak
De Heere Jezus gaat niet op het verzoek van de Grieken in. In plaats daarvan doet Hij een raadselachtige uitspraak. Hij zegt: Het uur is gekomen dat de Zoon des mensen zal verheerlijkt worden. Voorwaar, voorwaar zeg Ik u: Indien het tarwegraan niet in de aarde valt en sterft, zo blijft het tarwegraan alleen. Maar als het sterft, zo brengt het veel vrucht voort. 
Christus doelt hier op Zijn aanstaande sterven. Waarschijnlijk hebben Filippus en Andréas weinig van deze uitspraak begrepen. En de andere Joden al helemaal niet.
Eerder had de Heere Jezus ook zo’n raadselachtige uitspraak gedaan. Dat was tijdens het Loofhuttenfeest. Hij zei toen o.a.: Nog een kleine tijd ben Ik bij jullie. De Joden dachten dat Jezus bedoelde dat Hij naar het buitenland, naar Griekenland, zou emigreren. Maar ook daar doelde Hij op Zijn aanstaande sterven (Johannes 7:33-35). 

Ook nu kunnen we dingen horen en lezen in de Bijbel, die we niet begrijpen. Wat dat betreft moet de Heilige Geest steeds bijschijnen met de lamp van Zijn genade. Dan kan het zijn dat er ineens licht valt over een onbegrepen bijbelgedeelte. 
Als we zonder licht in een donkere kelder komen, zien we geen hand voor ogen. Pas als we het licht aandoen, zien we wat er in de kelder is. 
Zo is het met ons hart en verstand. Daar is het één duistere boel door de zonden. Zelfs als we de Heere al kennen, ervaar je dit maar al te veel. Ook dan moet de Heilige Geest steeds weer de lamp van Zijn Woord aandoen. Let op: Hij doet het geestelijke licht aan. Niet wij. 
De Heilige Geest heeft één begeerte. Hij wil iedereen in het volle licht van Christus zetten. 

Graankorrel
De Heere Jezus werkte graag met beelden uit de natuur. Zo ook in onze geschiedenis. 
Hij spreekt tot Andréas en Filippus over een graankorrel. Zo’n graankorrel moet in de aarde vallen en sterven. Dan pas brengt hij veel vrucht voort. 
Deze uitspraak kan, als je er oppervlakkig mee omgaat, te eenvoudig worden opgevat. 
Als in de natuur een graankorrel op een plankje blijft liggen, blijft het één graankorrel. De graankorrel moet de grond in en afgebroken worden en zo blootgesteld worden aan vocht.  
De Heere Jezus noemt dit het sterven van de graankorrel. 
Niet de hele graankorrel sterft. Binnenin de kern, in het hart, zit leven. Dat leven komt er op de plank niet uit. Maar als de harde kern door de vochtige grond week wordt, wel. Dan breekt het leven door en geeft veel vruchten.  

Bedoeling
Wij weten wat er met de Heere Jezus gebeurd is. Hij is gekruisigd en gedood. Hij gaf Zijn leven. 
Hij werd begraven, maar stond ook weer op. Dit sterven van Christus en Zijn opstanding zorgt voor veel vrucht. Zoals het sterven van de graankorrel veel vrucht geeft. 
Door het sterven van Christus komen veel mensen tot bekering en geloof. Daaronder zijn ook Grieken die Jezus zien door het geloof. Het zal een mensenmassa worden die niemand kan tellen. Zo veel. 
En dat allemaal omdat Christus Zich vrijwillig overgaf.  
In onze geschiedenis zie je dat Hij daarmee haast maakt. Hij haast Zich uit liefde tot Zijn Vader en Zijn kinderen naar de kruisdood. 
Jezus gebruikte Zijn tijd op aarde niet alleen om op uitnodigingen in te gaan. Als Hij dat gedaan zou hebben, zou dat te veel tijd kosten. Sommigen nodigden Hem ook uit voor de sensatie. 
Als Hij elke uitnodiging accepteerde, ging Hij voorbij aan de wil van Zijn Vader. De Vader wilde maar één ding: dat Hij het offer voor de zonden zou brengen. Daar heeft de Vader haast mee. 
Ook Christus heeft haast om deze wil van Zijn Vader te doen. Daarom slaat Hij de uitnodiging van de Grieken van de hand. Niets en niemand kon Hem van Zijn opdracht afhouden. Zijn weg ging dwars door de dood om leven voort te brengen. Tot eer van Zijn Vader.

Persoonlijk
Alleen wie Jezus volgt door het geloof, weet van dat stervende leven van de graankorrel. 
Die gaat steeds meer op de Heere Jezus vertrouwen. Die leert zichzelf verloochenen. 
De zonden willen ze met wortel en tak uitroeien. Of te wel: ze sterven aan de zonden. Dat kost pijn.
Net zoals de graankorrel, groeien ze in het geloof. Dat geloof gaat de diepte in. Met dat geloof word je niet de man of de vrouw. Nee, je blijft je verbazen over het geloof. Steeds intenser. 
Als het goed is heeft dat leven een aantrekkingskracht op anderen. Ze brengen vruchten voort van bekering en geloof. Ze wekken ook anderen op tot bekering en geloof. Ze willen de wil van hun hemelse Vader doen. Dat gaat met vallen en opstaan. In alles houden ze door de Heilige Geest het hart en oog op Christus gericht. Ze belijden: God zij geprezen voor Christus Jezus. Amen.

Desire
Perhaps you know that desire from the past. You heard stories about the Lord Jesus.
You thought: I wish that He were still on earth. Then I could at least see Him. I could touch Him and walk with Him. Now He is so far away to my awareness. The question may occupy you: Does He exist? And if He exists, why do  I feel so little of Him? Major questions.  However you're not alone in this respect.
Still, I think you start on the wrong side. You ask these questions, as it were, to the Lord. But the problem lies not with Him but with us. We experience so little of Him because we are so busy with everything. We do not take the time to let Him speak to us leisurely. Also today, He 'speaks'  to us through the Bible. He wants to show Himself in the Bible. Then your previous desire is fulfilled. Quite differently than you thought, but then you see Him by faith.

Greeks
In the time that the Lord Jesus was on earth, there were people who wanted to see Him. It was on one of the Jewish festivals in Jerusalem. There were also foreigners. They were not excluded.  We can learn from it.
These foreigners might have come into contact with Jewish believers. Through those contacts they  had repented.
A question. With how many foreigners have you already been in contact? And what did it result in?

Here in Jerusalem it were some Greeks who had converted to Judaism. They are in Jerusalem because of the Passover and want to worship the Lord.
The Greeks have heard of Jesus. Beautiful, isn’t it, when people hear of Jesus. That always makes a difference. Being neutral on Him can not. Either you reject Him or you worship Him. Bear this in mind.
These Greek seek contact with Philip, one of Jesus' disciples. Through him they want to get in touch with the Lord Jesus. Very probingly they ask Philip if he could arrange that.
Philip goes with this question to his colleague Andrew and together they tell it to Jesus.

Philip and Andrew are often mentioned in one and the same breath in the Gospel.  Apparently, they got along well with each other. In addition, they were both from the town of Bethsaida.
It,s nice if you have someone whom you regularly have contact with. With whom you can discuss things.
It becomes quite special if you understand each other in matters of religion. Then there is a double bond.

Enigmatic pronunciation
The Lord Jesus did not react to the Greeks’ request. Instead, He makes a puzzling statement. He says: The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Verily, verily, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it bringeth forth much fruit.
Christ is referring to His forthcoming death. Most probably Philip and Andrew understood little of this statement. And the other Jews not at all.
Earlier, the Lord Jesus had done such a mysterious statement too. That was during the Feast of Tabernacles. He said o.a .: Yet a little while I am with you. The Jews thought that Jesus meant that He would emigrate abroad, to Greece. But even there He was referring to His forthcoming death (John 7: 33-35).

Even now we can hear and read things in the Bible, we do not understand. In that respect the Holy Spirit must help to illuminate our minds with the light of His grace. It may be that all of a sudden light  falls on a misunderstood passage.
If we come without light in a dark cellar, we can’t see a thing. Only when we turn on the light, we see what is in the basement.
So it is with our hearts and minds. There a complete darkness prevails through sin. Even if we already know the Lord, you get to know this more and more. Also then the Holy Spirit must always switch on the light of His Word.  Mind you: He switches on the spiritual light. Not us.
The Holy Spirit has one desire. He wants to put everyone in the full light of Christ.

Grain
The Lord Jesus liked to work with images from nature. So in our history too. He speaks to Andrew and Philip about a grain of corn. Such a grain of wheat must fall into the ground and die.
Then only it bears much fruit.
This statement can, if you deal with it superficially, be understood too easily.
If in  the nature a grain of corn remains on a shelf , it remains one grain. The grain must be put in the ground and be broken down and in this capacity it is exposed to moisture.
The Lord Jesus calls this the death of the grain.
Not the whole grain dies. Inside the core, in the heart, is life. This life is not visible in its capacity on the shelf . But if the hard core is softened by the moist soil, it is. Then life breaks through and and gives much fruit.

Intention
We know what happened to the Lord Jesus. He was crucified and slain. He gave His life.
He was buried but rose again. The death of Christ and His resurrection gives much fruit. Such as the death of the grain gives much fruit.
By the death of Christ many people come to repentance and faith. Among them are also Greeks who see Jesus by faith. It will be a mass of people that no one can count. That much.
And all because Christ surrendered Himself voluntarily.
In our history, you see that he makes haste therewith. He hastens out of love for His Father and His children to the crucifixion.
Jesus used His time on earth not only to respond to invitations. If He would have done it, it would have cost too much time. Some also invited Him for the sensation it gave them.
If He had accepted every invitation, he would have deprived the will of His Father. The Father wanted only one thing: that He would consummate the sacrifice for sin.  That’s what the Father makes haste with.
Christ also hurries to do His Father’s will. Therefore, He doesn’t react to the invitation of the Greeks. Nothing and no one could dissuade Him from His mission. His way was right across death to bring forth life. To the glory of His Father.

In person
Only those who follow Jesus by faith, know about that dying life of the grain. That involves getting more confidence in the Lord Jesus. They learn to deny themselves.
They want to cut up sin root and branch. Or in other words: they die to sin. That hurts.
Just like the grain, they grow in faith. That faith goes into depth. With that faith you don’t grow too big for your boots. No, you continue to amaze about faith.  Even more intense.
If it is good that life has an allurement to others. They bring forth fruits of repentance and faith. They also inspire others to conversion and faith. They want to do the will of their heavenly Father. That goes with ups and downs. In everything they focus their heart and eye through the Holy Spirit on Christ. They confess: Praise God for Jesus Christ. Amen.
