Thema toespraak: ‘Paulus in Thessaloníca’ n.a.v. Handelingen 17:1-10.

Daarna komt Paulus in verschillende plaatsen. We komen hem ook tegen in Europa, in Griekenland. Andere jaren hebben we daarbij stil gestaan. Vandaag komen we Paulus tegen in Thessaloníca.

Jezus is dé beloofde Messias.

Groot of kleiner geloof. Het kleinste geloof is genoeg.
Onze goede werken tellen hierin niet mee. Alleen geloof.

Thematic address: "Paul in Thessalonica" according to Acts 17: 1-10.

We've been following Paul for a while on his travels. Last week, we heard how he had to leave Jerusalem because of being threatened. From there he went to Tarsen, his hometown.
Afterwards Paul comes in different places. We also encounter him in Europe, in Greece. Other years we have dealt with this. Today we meet Paul in Thessalonica. This is the current Thessaloniki, capital of Central Macedonia.

Sermons in the Synagogue (verse 1,2)
In this town Paul and his colleague Silas go to the synagogue on the Sabbat , as was their habit. He  preaches there three sabbaths. So for three weeks long.
Paul does not go to the synagogue for all kinds of news. No, he preaches there from the scriptures. So out of the Bible. He explains texts from the Bible. He does not do that randomly, but he compares the texts with each other and shows the unity of the Bible. After the original words which are used, Paul does this in a special way. He tries to make the Bible accessible and receptive to his listeners. He tries to seek his audience’s  understanding for his message.
Paul also knows that the Holy Spirit eventually has to instill  the message in man’s heart. But yet, he preaches in such a way, as if he himself has to bring the people to conviction and faith.

Christ (verse 3)
He preaches, among other things, that Christ must suffer, die and rise from the dead. Emphasising the word ‘must’.
Why? The Jews oppose the idea that the Messiah had to suffer. While they had to know better because it was predicted in the Old Testament.
Paul argues as follows. 1) The Old Testament teaches that the Messiah had to die and rise from the dead. 2) Jesus died and resurrected from death. 3) Conclusion: Jesus is the promised Messiah.
Paul wants to convince them that Jesus fulfilled all the conditions. Jesus is the promised Messiah. He is the Christ. Not somebody else. Jesus is the  Messiah par excellence.
Through His suffering, death and His resurrection from death He has taken away the sins.
Jesus reconciled God and people.
In the word reconciled, the word kiss is embedded. We give someone a kiss whom we like.
We do not kiss a person whom we are at loggerheads with.
Through all that Christ did,  reconciliation came about between God and man. To show that publicly, God the Father gives His Son a "kiss" as a token of love. That 'kiss' is the resurrection of Jesus from death. With that awakening from death God said: Everything is good again between Me and man. I approve of what Christ did. This does not automatically mean that everything is well between God and all people. No, repentance and faith are necessary and possible for that.

Only by faith in Christ can we be reconciled to God again. Only so God the Father can embrace us again. To give the kiss of reconciliation, of the forgiveness of our sins. This can only be done by faith in Jesus. Great or smaller faith. The least faith is enough.
Our good works do not count in this. Only faith. That's why Paul again and again presses on this faith.
The Holy Spirit wants to give this faith. Therefore, reading wth a praying heart and listening to the Bible is so important. He ensures that in this way you receive the atonement, forgiveness in Christ. Or you'll get that again. Towards that deepening of the relationship, that new 'kiss', a child of the Lord longs for.
A man also gives his lovely wife more than one kiss. If it's well, he makes every day a dash for her to embrace, to give her a kiss. This is what Christ wants to do with His children too.

Reaction on Paul's sermon (verse 4, 5a)
Some Jews come to faith in Christ through Paul's sermon. This also applies to many religious gentiles and a group of high-ranking women. What a joy!
As always, a sermon has two effects. The one gets hit and another drops out. You also read this of the sermon of Paul. There is a group of Jews who remain disobedient.
They even get jealous. Do you see how close disobedience to the Gospel and getting jealous is? Disobedience to the Gospel is disbelief. That's the worst sin there is. Do you know? One sin brings forth the other sin. Here in this case it’s jealousy. Jealousy is wishing evil to another or gloating someone’s downfall. And that’s what the Lord doesn’t want (Zechariah 8:17).

Before the city council (verses 5b -8)
The disobedient rent a few rioters, who throw  the city into confusion.  They force their way into the house of a certain Jason. They think that Jason has given shelter to Paul and Silas
If they do not find Paul and Silas in Jason's house, they drag Jason and others before the city council. There they vehemently accuse Paul and Silas of instigating a pandemonium. What is their imputation ? Paul and Silas would turn against the law of the emperor.
They especially blame Jason for having hospitably accommodated these men. He is in league with   Paul and Silas. He is therefore an accomplice. And that holds a severe punishment.
The rioters do everything to cause confusion.

Today you also have many who want to sow confusion and unrest. Those who try to disrupt society. Today, this can be done by modern means. One press of a PC button and you reach many with false messages. Messages aimed at sowing unrest. Also sending hostage software, a cyber attack, like last Tuesday, you can cause a big commotion.

Persecution.
Paul, Silas and the other brothers are persecuted here because of their faith. Did not the Lord Jesus say, They have persecuted Me, they will persecute you too? (John 15:20).
True believers experience something of that persecution. Sometimes this happens in a very sneaky way. For example, your promotion will not be continued. Or you are rejected for a particular function. Or you are thwarted by your neighbours. Or whatever. It can be anything. Was not it Pechtold who recently disapproved Segers in an unsympathetic way at the cabinet formation? You understand?

Deposit (verse 9)
When the city council hears the violent insinuation and  see the melee, they are afraid. For a riot, a revolution is something  they are not waiting for. If that happens  they’ll fall foul of the Roman authorities. This is the last thing the local authorities, the city council of Thessalonica wants.
They deliberate feverishly. They come to the conclusion that Jason and the others have to pay a lumpsum. That amount of money is also a deposit, a guarantee that Paul's sermons would not cause further disturbances. After that, the rioters let Jason and the others go and calm returns in the city. What you can not reach with money already. Then and now.

Away from Thessalonica (verse 10)
This means that Paul will have to leave Thessalonica. Paul can not be silent about the Lord Jesus. And the Jewish troublemakers keep sowing unrest as long as Paul continues to preach about Jesus.
So there is only one conclusion: Paul has to leave Thessalonica. Paul sees this as an "attack" of Satan. Later on he also reiterates this (1 Thessalonians 2:18). In the dead of night  Paul and Silas - helped by friends – flee from Thessalonica. He had fled more at night and helped by friends (Acts 9:25). They set out for Beréa, 80 km. southwest of Thessalonica.

Satan had then and now  his auxiliary troops. But the Lord is
Conqueror. He completely defeated and conquered Satan on Golgotha. Therefore, the Word of King Jesus will find passage.
That is why we still have His Word in the Netherlands. Even in Amsterdam. He carries on despite all the resistance. Do you already know that from your own life? If it would depend on you, it was hopeless. But because He is the Faithful, people are still converted of all ages. Because of that, people continue to believe in the Lord Jesus. Often with falling and rising. But He is and remains the Faithful. What a wealth, a richness to be allowed to live out of it. Despite your sins. Find this God with all that is in you.
