Thema toespraak: ‘Mozes’ begrafenis’  n.a.v.

Beloofd is beloofd

Mozes’ begrafenis
Niet veel later sterft Mozes. Niemand is erbij.

Jezus is Heer.

Amen.

Theme speech: "Moses' funeral", Deuteronomy 34 and Judas: 9

Highlights and Lows
In recent times, we listened to the history of Moses. Today the last installment.
Moses lived through many events during his his life. His life is characterized by ups and downs. Throughout all those highlights and lows, Moses knew that the Lord was with him. He had received grace from the Lord. And if the grace of Christ is with you, it turns out well after all.
That, Moses has also experienced . Despite his sins, there was always the mercy of forgiveness for Moses. Moses lived by faith in the Lord Jesus. Then you have a rich life in spite of the worst misfortunes.

Promised is promised
Moses led the people of Israel through the desert for forty years. Now they have reached the borders of the promised land. The Lord had promised that they would receive the promised land. Now it's so far. The Lord is going to  fulfill His promise now. The Lord always does what He promises. : With Him it holds: promised is promised. What a loyalty and love. Moses has lived with the focus on His faithfullness. He was repeatedly allowed to refuel from ‘the ‘waters of the gospel’ of God's faithfulness.
That's why it's give somuch joy to know the Lord with your heart. Only then you’ll have a future. Then you live with trial and error on the compass of God's faithfulness and promises. Those promises are always fulfilled for Jesus' sake. Then you also experience God's faithfulness in the sight of your infidelity. Moses has also lived that through. Moses also experienced that the Lord does not turn a blind eye or look away from sin. It also holds with Him: threatened is threatened. I do not say this to scare you. However I say this to make you aware of the awe and reverence to the Lord God. He is so different from us. Come on, go through the knees before Him.

Not into the promised land
Moses led the people to the borders of the promised land. So as far as the borders. Moses isn’t allowed to go into the land himself. Not because he could not get a "residence permit" or something like that. Well, this was a punishment for his sins indeed. Precisely Moses has experienced that the Lord doesn’t look away from sins. Certainly not with the sins of a leader . Why was Moses not allowed to enter into the promised land?
This is because of Moses' disobedience. Every child of the Lord, like Moses, knows that disobedience. Never think that children of God become kind of supermen.
Today, scholars are busy cultivating a kind of superman. A human without defects and highly intelligent. What foolish . God does not make supermen of His children.
They continues to be people who,to their distress, fail again and again. Thus, they increasingly learn that they are fully dependent on the grace of the Lord. Thus they learn that they are and stay sinners.
What was Moses' disobedience then?
At a certain moment, the Israelites were griping again because the water was running out.  On the Lord’s command Moses had to speak to a rock and then water would come out. Instead of speaking to the rock, Moses struck with his staff on the rock. The Lord heavily held this disobedience against Moses. As punishment he could therefore not enter in the promised land (Numbers 20). Consider what this must have been for Moses. His heart has cried over his sins. Do you recognize this that your heart is crying about your sins?

Vista on the Promised Land
The Lord however did allow Moses to see the promised land as far as the remotest corners. He then stood on top of Mount Nebo, which is northeast of the Dead Sea. No place was there that Moses did not see.

He saw the splendour and wealth of the land. His range of vision even reached as far as the Mediterranean Sea which lies about sixty kilometers to the west.
Just mind Moses’situation: Moses was hundered and twenty-one years old and then such a sharp look and a strong constitution. Moses did not need a fitness center to stay fit. That was a blessing the Lord had given him.
It is said that Moses' eye had not become dark nor his natural strength  abated (Deuteronomy 34: 7). What a blessing if you get old in that way. What a rich life is life with the Lord. That's what we call ' living by faith'.
Moses wouldn’t enter into the promised land. However, the Lord had another "land" for him. The heavenly land. There, Moses with great desire was looked forward to (Hebrews 11:16).
That heavenly land Moses was allowed to enter into at the expense of Jesus. After all, He opened the door of this land again through His suffering, death, and resurrection. That door which we closed through our sins. The Lord Jesus also calls Himself the door. Only through faith in Him is there again access to heaven. Now turn to Him with all your heart.
Moses' funeral
Not much later, Moses dies. Nobody is present at it. Moses is buried by the Lord in a valley in the land of Moab. This country is located east of the Dead Sea and is now current Jordan.
No one ever found the grave of Moses. And a very good thing it is. The Bible also tells why the Lord buried Moses in a secret place. By the way, that is a wonderful story in Judas 1: 9. It says that the Lord has buried Moses by means of the angel Michaël. Michaël is one of the most important angels. During that funeral, Michael had a fierce battle of words with the devil what had to happen to Moses' body. The devil wanted to prevent the body of Moses from being buried in a secret location. Why did the devil make such a fuss about Moses' dead body? He wanted the Israelites to commit idolatry with the body of Moses. Such an important prophet like Moses has never been there again. He had seen the Lord from face to face. That never happened and would never happen again. And what a wonders and miracles had Moses done? Moses was the greatest prophet in Israel. Therefore the devil wanted to seduce the Israelites to commit idolatry with the body of Moses. And idolatry with whatever,  has the Lord forbidden.  The lord abhors idolatry That's a big sin. Don’t you participate in idolatry? It can easily happen with deceased people. Think about incensing Elvis Presley or Johan Cruyff, to name just two. We also can make idols of living people. What a pandemonium around Max Verstappen. Repent of this kind of business. Christ wants to redeem you from it. That is one of His commitments. To whom then? To Jesus alone.

Christ and the devil
Also Christ has had fierce arguments with the devil. The Gospel is full of it. There is also nobody who knows the devil's tactics better than Christ. But there is also no one who can better protect you against his tricks than Christ. He has conquered the devil. Jesus is Lord. Do not underestimate the devil. Do not challenge him and do have dealings with him. Are you troubled with the devil? Sometimes even fights? Know that you can not overcome him by your own power. Then you always get the worst of it. You can only overcome him by repentance and faith. You can only overcome him by the Holy Ghost in Jesus' Name. The Holy Ghost invalidates you. Increasingly. Only 'invalidated' people learn the secret of Jesus' power. His strength is accomplished in weakness (2 Corinthians 12: 9). The Holy Spirit makes you weak in yourself. Right then alone, you are a suitable object for Christ. This is a mental dying process. But just in this dying lies the gain. Christ has been revealed, has come to break the works of the devil (1 John 3: 8). And he overcame the devil. You must and may come to Him in the way of prayer.

 Conclusion
Ten weeks we have been listening to the history of Moses. A history written and led by the Lord. We have encountered a lot of events and circumstances. I sincerely hope that you have recognized yourself in it, Particularly I pray that you will get to know the Lord or get to know Him better. Knowing Him with your heart can never be  materialized without the Lord Jesus. He is the Way to the Father. The Holy Spirit is the Agent of this knowledge. He does that through His Word. This is how He cultivates rebirth, repentance and faith. This goes with confession of sins and seeking forgiveness. This is a lifelong process. In that process, Christ becomes ever more important to you. You will love Him more and more. You want to live out of gratitude for Him. If you could, without sins. Don’t you know the Lord with your heart yet? Then I seriously pray you in His Name: Let yourself reconcile with God (2 Corinthians 5:20).Relinquish the battle. Pass yourself through the Holy Spirit into His hands. Amen.
