Keuzes maken - 1 Samuël 18:3-4

Ons leven bestaat voor een groot deel uit keuzes maken. Als ouders kiezen we een school voor onze kinderen. Later moeten ze kiezen welke studie ze gaan volgen. Maar ook welk beroep ze kiezen en waar ze gaan werken. Soms maken we een verkeerde keus en moeten daarop terugkomen. 
Vanmorgen gaat het over iemand die een keus maakt. Je kunt ook zeggen iemand die partij kiest. 
Het is Jónathan. De zoon van Saul, de eerste koning van Israël. We verdelen de toespraak in drieën:  
1) Jónathan kiest voor David. 2) Jónathan bewijst zijn keus. 3) Jónathan blijft bij zijn keus. 

1) Jónathan kiest voor David 
Hoe is Jónathan tot deze keus gekomen? Dan moeten we terug naar de geschiedenis van vorige week. Toen David de reus Goliath versloeg. Na deze overwinning op Goliath krijgt David in korte tijd veel vrienden. Eén vriendschap steekt hier ver bovenuit, die van Jónathan. Deze vriendschap ontstaat als David bij koning Saul verslag doet van het gevecht met Goliath. David verheerlijkt daar God.
Jónathan is daarvan onder de indruk gekomen. Hij ziet iets van het geloof, de moed en de kracht van  de jonge David. Dat raakt Jónathan omdat Jónathan ook de Heere liefheeft. 
Jónathans keus is een geloofskeus geweest. Hij voelt dat David iets heeft, wat hij bij zijn vader mist. Dat is het ware geloof. Dát is het wat Jónathan aan David verbindt. De Heere heeft deze (geestelijke) band gelegd. Er ontstaat een geestelijke vriendschap die blijft tot de dood. 

Denk je eens in wat het voor David geweest is dat Jónathan voor hem kiest. David is wel tot koning gezalfd. Maar ménselijk gezien is de kans dat hij koning wordt erg klein. Van Saul hoeft hij geen medewerking te verwachten. En niemand meer dan Jónathan had redenen om David ongunstig gezind te zijn. David ‘weerde’ Jónathan immers van de kroon, zegt de bekende bijbelverklaarder Matthew Henry. En juist Jónathan, de natuurlijke troonopvolger, kiest voor David. 
Deze tegennatuurlijke keus van Jónathan komt daarom ook van de Heere. Deze keus is een bevestiging van de trouw van de Heere voor David. Jónathans keus voor David is een gave van de Heere aan David. Een lévend bewijs dat hij koning zal worden.  

Weet je wat zo mooi is in deze geschiedenis? Deze vriendschap is een voorbeeld van de geestelijke band die Gods kinderen hebben met Jezus. Daarbij komt dat de Heere Jezus uit het geslacht van koning David afkomstig is. Zie je wat een mooie lijnen er in de Bijbel liggen? 
Jónathan en David zijn verbonden met een geestelijke liefdesband. Zo zijn Gods kinderen door de Heilige Geest aan Jezus én elkaar verbonden. Ze leren steeds meer wie Hij is, maar ook wie ze zelf blijven. Ondanks dat, heeft Hij het voor het zeggen in hun leven. 
Een vraag die dagelijks in hun hart ligt, is: Heere wat wilt U dat ik doen zal. Er ligt in het hart van Gods kinderen veel meer liefde tot Jezus, dan de liefde van Jónathan voor David. 

2) Jónathan bewijst zijn keus 
Na zijn keus gaat Jónathan de daad bij het woord voegen. Hij staat voor David in vol ornaat. In zijn koninklijke mantel, harnas, zwaard, boog en gordel. Weet je wat hij daarmee gaat doen? 
Hij geeft het allemaal aan David. Daarmee erkent hij openlijk David als koning. Hij heeft het voor het zeggen. Hij staat dus ongewapend voor David. Koning-af. En David? Hij neemt alle geschenken van Jónathan aan. Wat een zelfverloochening voor Jónathan. Hij ontdoet zich van al zijn koninklijke onderscheidingstekenen. Hij erkent hiermee dat alleen David daarop recht heeft. Hij doet het geheel vrijwillig en van harte. 

Wat ligt hierin ook een mooi beeld als mensen zich aan Koning Jezus mógen overgeven. Ze doen dit bedaard, vrijwillig, als een arme van geest, gelovig en oprecht. Net als Jónathan ga je deze keus bewijzen in je leven. Hoe?

Door niet alleen jezélf uit liefde aan Hem over te geven. Maar door die liefde ruim je ook alles op wat in de weg staat tussen Jezus en jou. Voor de een kan dat die zonde zijn en voor een ander weer een andere zonde. Kortom: wat je moet opruimen, weet je zelf het beste. 
Je doet dit niet om daarmee iets te verdienen bij de Heere. Er valt immers niet te verdienen bij Hem. Daarom zegt Hij dat Hij gekomen is om te dienen en niet om gediend te worden (Markus 10:45). 
Zoals in een goed huwelijk vrouw en man alles voor elkaar over hebben, zo is het ook hier. 
Hij zorgt ervoor dat we onszelf in Hem verliezen. Deze keus voor Hem doen we niet één keer, maar steeds weer. Dit is een dagelijks bewuste keus. Deze keus heeft ook gevolgen.

3) Jónathan blijft bij zijn keus
Deze keus heeft natuurlijk gevolgen voor Jónathan. Want zijn keus wordt steeds duidelijker voor de mensen om hem heen. Dus ook voor vader Saul. Dat dit moeilijkheden oplevert, mag duidelijk zijn. Het kost Jónathan strijd. Daarbij komt dat Saul steeds vijandiger wordt tegen David (1 Sam.23:17). 
Wat een strijd in het leven van Jónathan. Trouw zijn aan zijn vader naar het gebod van God: eer uw vader en uw moeder. Aan de andere kant zijn hartelijke keus voor David en het openlijk bewijzen van die keus. Het leidt steeds weer tot conflicten in zijn leven.  

Misschien herken je deze conflictsituaties wel. Je deed de keus om de Heere te dienen. Mensen in je familiekring, kennissenkring en of werkkring kunnen én willen dit niet begrijpen. Wat een moeite kan dit geven om dan trouw te blijven en ervoor uit te komen.
Jónathan deed af en toe een goed woordje voor David bij zijn vader. Misschien heb jij in deze conflictsituaties ook wel iemand die het voor jou opneemt. Daar kan en wil de Heere voor zorgen.
Hoe dan ook: zo’n keus voor de Heere in je leven, roept weerstand op. Vaak van een kant die je niet verwacht. Je gaat dan iets ervaren van de spot die de Heere Jezus kreeg.  
Ondanks de moeiten bleef Jónathan trouw aan David. Dat kan van ons niet gezegd worden als wij de keus voor Jezus hebben mógen maken. Maar, de grote David, Christus Zelf, blijft de Getrouwe. ‘Indien wij ontrouw zijn, Hij blijft getrouw; Hij kan Zichzelven niet verloochenen’ (2 Timótheüs 2:13).  

Dit jaar herdenken we de Nationale Synode van Dordrecht, 400 jaar geleden. Via de nieuwsmedia zul je er ongetwijfeld over horen. Met een knipoog naar die herdenking vraag ik: is jouw keus voor Jezus uit eigen vrije wil of is die keus ‘voorbestemd’? Met andere woorden: koos je zelf of is het genade? Of werkt de genade samen met jouw keus?       

Herken je de keus van Jónathan in je leven voor de grote David, de Heere Jezus? Dan zul je ook belijden dat het de Heere was Die jou liet kiezen voor Hem. 
Verzet je je nog tegen Hem, vroom of godsdienstig? Kies dan heden wie je dienen zult (Jozua 24:15). Leg al je vermeende waardigheid aan Zijn voeten. Hij wil niets liever dan vrede met je maken.

Our lives consist largely of making choices. As parents we choose a school for our children. Later they have to choose which study they will follow. But also which profession they choose and where they want to work. Sometimes we make a wrong choice and have to revoke that choise.
This morning it is about someone who makes a choice. You can also say someone who takes side with.
It's Jónathan. The son of Saul, the first king of Israel. We divide the speech into three:
1) Jónathan takes side of David. 2) Jónathan proves his choice. 3) Jónathan sticks to his choice.

1) Jónathan chooses David
How did Jónathan come to this choice? Then we have to go back to the history of last week. When David defeated the giant Goliath. After this victory over Goliath, David gets a lot of friends in a short time. One friendship far exceeds this, that of Jónathan. This friendship arises when David reports to king Saul about the fight with Goliath. David glorifies God there.
Jónathan has been impressed. He sees something of the faith, the courage and the strength of the young David. That touches Jónathan because Jónathan also loves the Lord.
Jonah's choice has been a choice of faith. He feels that David has something that he lacks with his father. That is true faith. That is what connects Jónathan with David. The Lord has laid this (spiritual) bond. A spiritual friendship between them comes into being that continues until death.

Imagine what it was for David that Jónathan chooses for him. David has been anointed king. But from a human perspective, the chance of becoming a king is very small. As to Saul he  need not expect any cooperation. And no one more than Jonathan had reasons to be unfavorably inclined to David. David 'turned away' Jónathan from the crown, says the well-known Bible interpreter Matthew Henry. And it is Jónathan, the natural heir to the throne, who singled out David.
This unnatural choice of Jónathan therefore comes from the Lord. This choice is a confirmation of the Lord's loyalty to David. Jonathan's choice for David is a gift from the Lord to David. A lasting proof that he will become king.

Do you know what is so beautiful in this history? This friendship is an example of the spiritual bond that God's children have with Jesus. In addition, the Lord Jesus comes from the lineage of King David. Do you see what beautiful lines are in the Bible?
Jónathan and David are united with a spiritual bond of love. Thus God's children are bound to Jesus and each other by the Holy Spirit. They learn more and more who He is, but also who they themselves remain. In spite of that, He has a say in their lives.
A question that lies in their heart every day is: Lord, what do You want me to do? There is much more love for Jesus in the hearts of God's children than the love of Jonathan for David.

2) Jónathan proves his choice
After his choice, Jónathan adds the deed to the word. He stands before David in full regalia. In his royal cloak, armour, sword, bow and belt. Do you know what he's going to do with that?
He gives it all to David. With this he openly acknowledges David as king. He's in charge. He stands therefore unarmed before David. King-off. And David? He accepts all of Jónathan's gifts. What a self-denial for Jónathan. He gets rid of all his royal decoration signs. He hereby acknowledges that only David is entitled to it. He does it entirely voluntarily and wholeheartedly.

What is in this a beautiful picture if people are allowed to surrender to King Jesus. They do this composedly, voluntarily, faithfully and sincerely as a poor man in spirit . Just like Jónathan, you are going to prove and make visible this choice in your life. How?

By not only surrendering yourself to Him driven by love. But through that love you also clear away everything that stands in the way between Jesus and you. For one person that can be that sin and another sin for another. In short: what you have to clean up, you know best yourself.
You do not do this to earn something with the Lord. After all, there can nothing be earned for Him. That is why He says that He has come to serve and not to be served (Mark 10:45).
As in a good marriage wife and husband are willing to give anything to one another, so it is here too.
He makes us lose ourselves in Him. We do not do this choice for Him once, but over and over again. This is a daily conscious choice. This choice also has consequences.

3) Jónathan sticks to his choice
This choice has of course consequences for Jónathan. Because his choice is becoming clearer to the people around him. So also for father Saul. That this creates difficulties may be clear. It costs Jónathan an inner struggle. In addition, Saul is becoming increasingly hostile to David (1 Sam.23: 17).
What a spiritual struggle in the life of Jónathan. Be faithful to his father according to the commandment of God: honour your father and your mother. On the other hand, his cordial choice for David and the frank proof of that choice. It continuously leads to conflicts in his life.

You may recognize these conflict situations. You made the choice to serve the Lord. People in your family circle, circle of acquaintances and / or work group can not and do not want to understand this. What a trouble this can give to stay faithful and admit.
Jónathan occasionally put in a word for  David with his father. Perhaps in these conflict situations you also have someone who will stand up for you. The Lord is able and will take care of that.
Anyway: such a choice for the Lord in your life, evokes resistance. Often from a side that you do not expect. You will then experience something of the ridicule and mockery that the Lord Jesus is done.
Jónathan remained faithful to David despite the difficulties. That can not be said of us if we  are allowed to make the choice for Jesus. But, the great David, Christ Himself, remains the Faithful. "If we are unfaithful, He remains faithful; He can not deny himself "(2 Timothy 2:13).

This year we commemorate the National Synod of Dordrecht, 400 years ago. You will undoubtedly hear about it via the news media. With a wink to that memorial, I ask: is your choice for Jesus of your own free will or is that choice 'predestined'? In other words: did you choose yourself or is it grace? Or does grace work with your choice?

Do you recognize the choice of Jonathan in your life for the great David, the Lord Jesus? Then you will also confess that it was the Lord Who let you choose Him.
Are you still resisting Him, piously or religiously? Choose then who you will serve today (Joshua 24:15). Put all your supposed dignity at His feet. He wants nothing more than to make peace with you.
